II-Session Outline
Session Title: Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases
Session Objectives:  Know agencies responsible for communicable disease prevention and control.
 Examine the emerging and re-emerging diseases.
 Recall myths and misconceptions about communicable disease.
Key Concepts:  Infectious disease outbreaks had a significant impact on shaping the societies and cultures throughout human
history. Major epidemics and pandemics such as the bubonic plague, yellow fever, cholera, typhus, and influenza
have afflicted humanity over the centuries by determining outcomes of wars, extinguishing empires, and wiping out
entire population.
 Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) and re-emerging infectious diseases (REIDs) are responsible for a significant
proportion of the infectious disease outbreaks that have plagued humanity over the ages. EIDs are infectious
diseases that have not occurred in humans before, have occurred previously in humans but affected only small
populations in isolated areas, or have occurred in the past but were only recently recognized as distinct diseases
caused by infectious agents REIDs are infectious diseases that constituted significant health problems in a particular
geographic area or globally during a previous time period, then declined greatly, but are now again becoming health
problems of major importance [4]. Remarkably, specific infectious pathogens, such as influenza viruses, continuously
emerge and re-emerge.
How it is spread: Some infectious diseases can be passed from person to person. Some are transmitted by bites from insects
or animals. And others are acquired by ingesting contaminated food or

water or being exposed to organisms in the environment.
Prevention: Many infectious diseases, such as measles and chickenpox, can be prevented by vaccines. Frequent and
thorough hand-washing also helps protect you from infectious diseases.

One thing that is important to mention when talking about communicable disease is the role that capitalism, a globalized
economy and climate change play in the spread of some communicable diseases. We know that many recent epidemics can
be linked to deforestation practices, corporate agricultural practices and other practices driven by environmental destruction
and climate change. As another example, as we see temperatures rise globally we see an increase in diseases transmitted by
mosquitoes and other vectors. We also know that in a capitalist economy, the main priority is always to value profit over
human life. This push to continue to produce and create wealth is helping to further spread the virus by forcing people back
to work.
●COVID-19 is an example of a communicable disease. Let’s start to explore what COVID-19 is.
What agency is responsible for international responses to emerging diseases?
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the
Department of Defense (DoD) are the primary agencies involved in implementing global health security programs in partner
countries.
What are the objectives of the DOH Emerging and Remerging infectious diseases program?
Hence, this program aims to have an organized system that focuses on planning, development, and management of
outbreaks due to infectious diseases that have the potential to become epidemics and pandemics.

III- Teaching Strategies Class Sharing/ Pair, Journal, News Analysis,Meditation

Components: Duration Activities and Procedures
Introduction and Warm-Up: 5 minutes Perform Dance Exercise
Concept Exploration 20 minutes  Shows pictures of emerging and re-emerging communicable diseases

 Ask learners about what emerging and re-emerging communicable diseases. Take
responses from the learners and make sure that the following is explained:
 Emerging infectious diseases are diseases of infectious origin whose incidence in
humans has increased within the past decades or threatens to increase in the
near future. The reappearance of a previously known infection after a period of
disappearance or decline in incidence is known as re-emergence.
