Previous Knowledge: Students have spent the last number of weeks working through the parabola
and have completed a series of questions using the different methods. They should have a nice grasp
on the topic now.
Previous Skills: Students have used the rectangle method in previous classes and should be well on
their way in to being able to complete these questions fully without any assistance.
Teacher Observations: There is a mix of ability in the classroom with some of the students being very
good and others that are very weak. I have to provide a series of easy and hard questions so that both
abilities can complete a question.
2. LESSON RATIONALE
Brief outline of WHY this content is the basis of the lesson, and why these teaching KEY*
methodologies were selected- a justification.
This is part of the junior cycle program and in conic sections 1. The parabola is very Nl
important as it can come up alongside an ellipse question. The structure of this lesson is to
have the student’s complete questions so that then they can incorporate the parabola with Rl
an ellipse which is bound to come up in a junior cycle exam.
