CHAPTER 1
Introduction
management. Ng (2018), explains "As there are many different forms of waste, there are also
different forms of collecting and processing waste." trash can be solid or liquid. Electronic
waste, hazardous trash, medical waste, and organic garbage are all examples of waste. (Ng,
2018).
Schools have usually been one of society's largest garbage producers. According to Breyer
(2012), 55.9 million pupils from elementary through high school were enrolled in 2012. As a
result, the amount of garbage generated would be large. Apolonio (2019), the total organic
waste which consists of food, milk, and paper, revealed a staggering amount of 81.5% of the
waste generated per student. Schools can create sustainable initiatives by adopting two
approaches to converting school food waste – the system of reusing, reducing, and recycling.
Globally, waste management studies in schools have been conducted to address the
waste problem. In the Philippines, proper waste management is a crucial problem not only for
schools but for the whole country. In accordance with Sections 55-56 of Republic Act 9003, also
known as The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, the Philippine National Government is
required to work with the Department of Education (DepEd) and other educational institutions
to strengthen the integration of environmental concerns into school curricula to all levels, with
a focus on the theories and practices of SWM. This encourages the general public to become
education. So, senior high school students were used in this study. The senior high school
curriculum has recently been incorporated into the fundamental education, that originate back
to R.A. The Enhanced Basic Education of 2013 or Act No. 10533 was passed. The researcher
wants to figure out how much senior high school students know about solid waste
management, where their knowledge comes from, and how they manage their solid waste
because they spend 12 years in basic education with environmental awareness and education

Awareness of solid waste management will create change on how people look at
garbage. People grew up thinking that garbage is garbage, it should not be touched or one
should not go near to it. They thought before that all types of garbage should just be thrown in
management that should be present to establish a good program for the community.
Barloa et al. (2014) noted the inclusion of relevant topics – with emphasis on proper
environmentally-sustainable practices.
Magante (2013) in the study entitled, “The Disaster of Non-Compliance to Solid Waste
Management Act in the Philippines “emphasized how the policy article aims to bring the public
attention to a critical environmental law and its serious implications on the fate of human
security. Also, the study presents the salient provisions ofRA9003 as well as the environmental
dangers which actually resulted from non-observance of the law. In addition, this policy brief
In the study of Abocejo and Vivar (2015) entitled “Village-Extent Solid Waste
Management in Lahug, Cebu City, Philippines”, it concluded that the awareness of the residents
and business establishments in the barangay about solid waste management is high. Thus, the
practices and compliance of residents indicates the knowledge and training they have acquired.
Arabaca, et al. (2015) in their study entitled, “Level of Environmental Considerations and
Protection from Waste Problems at Iligan City National High School, Iligan City, Philippines
undertaken and that these must be translated into the schools and 31 students plans of
then the nature of the school to provide transformational learning experiences that promote
environmentally sustainable action and that educator’s role is to help students to gain
