Complaints/Suggestions
As in all Clubs and Associations, there are times when members
are not completely satisfied with events, which occur from time
to time. The Gawler Districts Orchid Club is no exception. If at
any time you have a complaint or suggestions, please submit it in
writing to the Committee with your signature. President Trevor
Lehmann has arranged a suggestion box for members to put
suggestions. This is your Club, the committee need to know what
you want including topics and Guest Speakers, for example.

President’s Report: It was very pleasing to see more members at this

meeting, double the last meeting. 34 attended which was really pleasing
to see along with visitors & members unable to attend in the past.
Beginners Group has resumed with Steve Howard, & as always well
attended & informative. Jim Shaughnessy, our Guest Speaker, gave
comprehensive PowerPoint presentation on Shade house Growing
Australian Native Orchids. As always with Jim, it was well done with
colourful illustrations & good knowledge from years of experience.

GDOC 3 June 2022

Plant numbers were also up from last Meeting. 7 plants in 2nd Division,
13 in 1st Division & 28 in Open Division. There was a really a good
diverse selection across all Divisions. Congratulations to those winners &
thanks to all who made the effort to prepare plants for Show Tables.
Again, a welcome supper was prepared by Peter A M, & enjoyed by
those who partook. Again, thanks to those who were able to assist in
setting up tables, chairs, cleaning up etc. Our next Meeting will be
special, in that we have a Guest Speaker from Victoria. It would be
pleasing to see as many Members attend as possible. He is Craig Miles
from Orchids of Distinction, & those that have heard him before will
know he is good, as he is a Professional Grower with many years of
experience. Reminder to all that Murray & Margaret Page are downsizing
their Orchid collection. As we know, they grow some high-quality
Orchids. Club Members have first choice to purchase before they sell
openly, so I suggest you get in early to get your pick. Please contact them
on directly on 82500689 just to make sure they are home before calling
in. Looking forward to seeing you all next Meeting,
Trevor Lehmann

Registrars Report: Registrars Report. It was a nice change to see

some familiar faces at our May meeting as some normality returns
to the club. All divisions were well supported in the floral
competition, especially Open Division with 28 plants across a wide
range of genera and featuring some high-quality plants amongst the
display. Plant of Open Division was a spectacular specimen of an
old favourite, Lc. Angel Heart 'Hihimanu'. Sporting 7
inflorescences carrying up to 10 flowers on a spike it was a plant
once owned by Alan and Doreen Garner. Grown by Steve Howard
it was a clear choice for not only divisional winner but plant of the
night. First division saw our autumn show winner still winning two
weeks later. Paphiopedilums are a great orchid to grow and stay in
good condition for long periods of time. Paph. Ceres x
charlesworthii was a lovely 3 spikes pot full grown by Rosemary
Phillips. Finally, Trevor Lehmann continues his good run in second

GDOC 14 June 2022

division with a very early but very well grown Australian native
Den. tetragonum. This form from the Conway Range in Qld is the
earliest form of this fragrant species and was particularly well
coloured. We also saw a couple of other hybrids benched and it was
good that the judges were quick to see that the parents of these
hybrids were also present in the display. Having the parents of
hybrids present gives members a rare look at what makes up some
of these hybrids. Overall, it was a very good overall display in the
floral completion covering a wide range of orchid genera so my
thanks to all who benched.
-Steve Howard

General advice Start a baiting and trapping programme as rats and mice numbers
will be bad this season as are ants. Ensure plenty of cover available
for show plants to avoid weather damage to blooms. Check shade
house for those dry spots after rain as these plants will not get any
water. With cooling weather and increasing humidity, fungal issues
such as botrytis become more prevalent.
