 JUDGING ROSTER FOR NOVEMBER 2019
Being our last meeting for the year, I ask all judges to be available, and we will sort
out who does which division on the night. For the last two or three months, I have
organised the roster straight after the meetings, and someone always seems unable to
come. We will work as quickly as possible to then be free for socializing at the supper
afterwards.
Sharon and Lesley, yes I still need your help if possible.
Many thanks to all the judges and computer operators for all their help and support
throughout the year, and I sincerely hope we have a fabulous year next year with all
our judging. Stay safe over the Xmas break.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2019

Here we are at the final month of the year. Hopefully our hottest season will not be too
stressful, but all indications are that we will be in for another Summer of extreme
temperatures.

At the last Workshop someone left behind a Tupperware bowl. If you are missing one
with a blue lid it can be collected at the December night or day meetings. If it is yours
and you cannot get to the meetings please ring me to arrange collection. Committee
phone numbers are in the front pages of this Bulletin.

The December meeting is also a social event. Please bring a plate to share and also please
have the food already cut up to serve straight away, this will take a bit of the strain off
of our great kitchen helpers.

If you are a listener to ABC 891 Talkback Gardening with Jon Lamb you may be
interested in getting Jon’s newsletter. OCSA is contributing an orchid based article on
the second Friday of the month.

The end of the year, as always, is when we ask members to think about standing for a
club committee position. The club must have a committee to exist and I am sure there
are members with skills that would enhance the governing group and steer OCSA in the
direction needed through the next few years. Some of the long serving committee
members would like a break so if you have ever thought of being a part of the club’s
leadership team, in any capacity, please nominate or ask committee members for
information.

Another important reminder. You have very little time to purchase your Anniversary
Raffle tickets. Although a bit dearer than usual at $5 a ticket there are prizes on offer
that will not be seen again. The Koransha orchid print vases, the chromolithograph print
and the OCSA Ruby Anniversary Port are definitely collector’s items. Please bring some
extra cash to get a ticket or 2 along with the usual club raffle. This raffle will be drawn
at the AGM meeting.

I hope you all have a great festive season and manage to bring your plants through the
Summer in good condition ready for a fantastic 2020. Remember our first major show
is the Autumn Show at the Festival of Flowers in April.

BEGINNER’S GROUP
Don’t forget the Beginners Group at the December Monthly Meeting from 7:15pm to
7:45pm. There will be expert club growers to help new and older members in the art of
growing and cultivating orchids so come along early to increase your knowledge.

 GUEST SPEAKER DECEMBER NIGHT MEETING
The December meeting will primarily be a social evening; however, while the judging
is in progress, Trevor our President, will give a short presentation on the history of the
Orchids in Schools program. This will be co-presented by Christian West, senior
student at Urrbrae Agriculture High School.
Please remember to bring a plate of sandwiches, savouries or sweets; already prepared
to place on the supper table.

 NOVEMBER DAY GROUP REPORT
We had a lovely group attend our day meeting this month including one of our long term
life members, Leo Micenko, with his son Peter. It is always nice to see our older
members attend the meetings
I had a number of apologies from Wendy, Arthur, Barbara and Joan and hope they will
be able to attend next month.
Our Guest speaker was Ron Parish and he gave a wonderful talk on fertilising our
orchids and for those who brought in some of their mixed fertilisers it was an eye opener
to us all as to how different our mixes were when Trevor Camac tested them all.
Thankyou Ron for agreeing to do this talk and also to Irene, thank you for reminding
him to come.

quality plants.
Our next night meeting is on the 5th
December and this will be a social
night. Please bring a small plate of

plate to save the kitchen ladies the
extra work.
Our next day meeting is on the 13th December and will also be our Xmas breakup. We
will still have the appreciation table for your plants and we will also have our Kris
Kringle, so if you would like to be included, please bring a small gift for either a male
or female worth $5.00 or under. If you can also bring a small plate of food to share for
our afternoon tea it would be appreciated. We will try to stop early so we can have a bit
more time to socialise.
For our newer members, we do not have a meeting in January. Our next meetings in the
New Year will be in February with the AGM being at the Night meeting on the 6 th
February 2020 and the Day meeting on the 14th February, 2020.

 FROM THE REGISTRAR FOR NOVEMEBER 2019
Plant of Open Division and Registrars Choice
Judge Pat Harmer and the team chose the plant called Arpophyllum giganteum from
the 32 plants benched at the meeting. They chose the plant because of its outstanding
colour and very good presentation. It had 15 racemes of very delicate purple flowers,
which were too numerous to count. This beautiful species comes from Mexico and
Central America, and it grows high in the cloud forest, which makes it acceptable to
our climate. Pat mentioned that the plant appears to have been grown up high because
of the markings on the leaves. She then congratulated the growers Michael
Willoughby and Oui Ju on their fantastic cultivation.
According to Michael and Oui, they grow this plant cool, with it receiving natural rain
during winter, then once to twice weekly at other times, getting more frequent during
the hot weather. It receives fertilizer weakly at every watering, and the plant is
growing in medium bark. Their comments about the plant was that it is very hardy
plant, and it has high light requirements. Another fabulous species plant guys, well
done.

Plant of First Division

Another terrific plant from Ron and Elizabeth
Hannaford became plant of this division. Their
plant of Cymbidium Black Stump had 6 pendulous
inflorescences bearing up to 30 small brown
flowers, with a red/maroon labellum. It is a hybrid
of Cymbidium (Australian Midnight x Cricket), and
it has two Australian cymbidiums parents being
Cym. canaliculatum and Cym. maddidum, as well as
Cym. devonianum and Cym. atropurpureum from
S.E. Asia in its background. It is an easy to grow,
late flowering cymbidium to have in your collection said Judge Les Nesbit.
Ron and Elizabeth have recently moved houses, and this plant has been left hanging
under a pergola with reasonably high light levels, receiving only rain and an
occasional watering. They use Peters Exec Cal/Mag Finisher as fertilizer and the plant
is growing in plain bark. This goes to show that this a very hardy plant. Good Job.

Plant of Second Division
Sarcochilus Sweetheart was the plant chosen by the
judges as plant of this division from the 8 plants
benched. It is an Australian Native Epiphyte Hybrid
that was registered in 1998 and is a crossing of
Sarcochilus (Heidi x Fitzhart). The plant had 18
pendulous red, pink and white flowers, it is a cool
grower and it obviously likes growing where in its
current place. Judge Rayne Riggs told the members
that it has 62% Sarco. hartmannii and 38% Sarco.
fitzgeraldii mixed in the background, with the colour of the flowers coming from the
Sarco. fitzgeraldii showing through the flowers. It is grown by Trevor Noble, and
congratulations go to Trevor for this wonderful example of how to grow Sarcochilus.
Well done. Trevor comments that he turns his sprinklers off during winter, hand
watering when necessary, but using sprinklers 3 times a week during summer, with
extra hand watering on the hotter nights. He uses Neutrog Strike Back for Orchids and
worm wee as fertilizer. He uses a mix of medium bark mixed with Bunnings mix, and
has styrene foam in the bottom of the pot. It grows under 50% shade cloth with his
other orchids.

Plant of Orchids in Schools Division

Eight plants across 3 genera groups were presented
for judging by the OIS programme said Judge Steve
Howard. The plant eventually chosen was a nice
grown hybrid called Cattleya Daniela. It is a primary
hybrid consisting of Cattleya (intermedia x
jongheana) which was registered in 1991. The plant
was growing in a mix of bark and coconut husk, with
the plant displaying a branching growth that lends it to specimen culture. The flowers
were quite large given the parentage, and it shows good shape and colour making this
a very attractive orchid in any collection. Well grown and Congratulations to
Willunga High School students. Trevor Garard as Mentor to the students of the WHS
orchid club writes that the students grown this hybrid cool, watering weekly during
winter if there has been no rain, then 3 times a week in hotter conditions. It gets
fertilizer a few times a year, and its mix is bark and coconut husk. His comments were
that it is easy to grow as well as a good plant for novice growers. It is growing under
50% shade cloth, with extra shade cloth up to 75% shade from late November to late
March.
