METHOD STATEMENT

FOR

HYDRAULIC PULLOUT TEST

Method Statement for Hydraulic Pull-Out Test
OBJECTIVE
The purpose of site tests may be either:

a) Investigative Test (Mock Up) - To establish the suitability of fixing and/or admissible
loads in a particular base material. This is provided as part of the product submission
for specifier approval. The test is usually witnessed by the consulting engineers, owners
and contractors.
b) Proof Test - To confirm the Manufacturer's Recommended (Safe Working) Tensile Load.
"Manufacturer's Recommended Load" means the Load Recommended by the
Manufacturer for that type and size of fixing in the base material concerned at the same
strength, if known and taking account of any spacing and / or edge distances reduction
factors. This is usually performed on request by consultants or their representative as
well as the contractor.
c) Validation Test - To validate installation/adequacy of the installation of fixings. This is
usually proposed by the consultants to validate the quality of work by installers or
contractors.

GUIDELINES
1. Pull-out test result should meet the minimum required Design Load.
2. For anchors, Design Loads should be used as a guideline. Tensile load should not
exceed twice the Manufacturer's Recommended Load or permanent damage may affect
the fixing or the structure. If there is anchor design calculation done by Hilti engineers,
the design load should be used.
3. For rebars or threaded rods, Design Loads should be used as a guideline, provided that
it does not exceed the ultimate service limit (95% of yield strength of steel).
4. Thread engagement between fixing and coupler should be adequate to take the applied
load and for Ultimate Load Testing should be at least 1.5 x d, where d = nominal
diameter of the thread under test.

5. The load-measuring gauge should be accurate to within 5% of the readings. This
equipment should be recalibrated at least annually, by a laboratory with load
measuring equipment whose calibration is traceable to national standards such as
Sirim.
6. There will be two modes of testing provided by HILTI (M) Sdn Bhd
 Non-destructive, and
 Destructive
* Subject to Hilti (M) Sdn. Bhd. general testing terms and conditions.
EQUIPMENT

ENERPAC Hydraulic Hollow Jack Set

Testing will be conducted using a hollow cylinder jack. It will be manually operated by a
hand pump and a analogue display will be used to monitor the loading during the test.
The testing set-up is illustrated in the figures below;

TESTING PROCEDURE
1. The threaded rod / rebar will be loaded by means of pullout by a hydraulic hollow
cylinder jack powered by a hand pump.
2. The purpose of the mechanical threaded coupler is to grip the threaded rod or
mechanical anchor so that when the hydraulic hollow jack is being pumped, it will try to
pull the threaded rod out.
3. The threaded rod / rebar tested will be loaded according to HILTI’s recommended /
design load or to failure for destructive test.
4. All readings will be displayed on analogue display panel / pressure gauge in kN or psi
(lb/in2).
5. Failure is detected when load displayed display panel will not increase anymore,
showing either bond, steel or concrete movement.
Conversion of PSI to kN
The following is the conversion from psi readings to metric readings:

psi  kN = ( psi X Area X 4.448 )  1000

kN  psi = ( kN X 1000 )  (Area X 4.448)

Note: Area refers to effective area of the hollow cylinder jack. Please refer to conversion
table for more info.
TEST REPORT
1. After each test, a Site Testing Data Record Sheet is produced to record the details as
per site testing and two copies will be submitted which will be acknowledged by the
witness during the testing.
2. Official testing report will be produced upon request by client which will include will include
testing site details, personnel involvement, product information, applications details,
method and procedure of test, equipment info, summary reports, and calibration
certificates.
3. Testing report can be completed after 5 working days from date of testing for Klang
Valley and approximately 7 working days for outstation.
