This document provides instructions for comparing fractions using the symbols <, >, or =. It explains that to compare unlike fractions with different denominators, you multiply the first numerator by the second denominator and the second numerator by the first denominator to obtain two new numbers, and use the greater than, less than, or equal symbols based on which product is greater. An example compares the fractions 28/15 and 27/28 by this method. The document concludes with an activity asking students to practice comparing fractions using these symbols.

Compares Fractions Using the Symbols
Fraction is used to represent the portion/part of the whole thing. It represents the equal parts of the whole. A fraction has two parts, namely numerator and denominator. The number on the top is called the numerator, and the number on the bottom is called the denominator. The numerator defines the number of equal parts taken, whereas the denominator defines the total number of equal parts in a whole. Compare fractions just as you did to compare whole numbers. Remember that the symbol opens to the greater fraction and points to the lesser fraction. You can use words or a symbol to compare fractions
Comparing Fractions and finding which unlike fraction (different denominators) is
larger or smaller.
• 1. Write the two fractions.
• 2. Multiply the first numerator with the second denominator. • 3. Write the product above the first fraction. • 4. Multiply the second numerator with the first denominator. • 5. Write the product above the second fraction. • 6. Decide which product is greater and put the greater than or less than symbol between the two fractions. Let’s think about this Which sign belongs between the two fractions?
