Q32 What is solenoid? Draw the pattern of magnetic field lines of

(i) a current carrying solenoid and

(ii) straight carrying conductor

List two distinguishing features between the two fields

OR
. What are magnetic field lines? List three characteristics of these lines. Describe in brief an activity to study
the magnetic field lines due to a current carrying circular oil

ANS: It is coil containing many circular terns, there wire are wrapped closely in the shape of a cylinder and
it is used as an electromagnet.

It also refers to any device that converts electrical energy to mechanical energy using a solenoid. The
device creates a magnetic field from electric current and uses the magnetic field to create linear motion.
In above image:-

1). The magnetic field for the current carrying solenoid

2). For bar magnet.

List of the distinguishing features between the two fields:

a) The poles of the bar magnet do not lie exactly at the end of the magnet but are somewhat inside. In a
solenoid, poles can be considered to be lying at the edge.

b) The magnetism retains in the bar magnet naturally but in the solenoid, the magnetism is there so long
current flows through it.

c) A magnetic field of a bar magnet emanates from throughout the body of the magnet, with more
intensity at the poles. While there is no field emanating from the lateral surface of the solenoid.

Magnetic field lines: These are the imaginary close curves which are used to represent the magnetic field
around the magnet.

The properties of the magnetic field lines are listed below:

Magnetic field lines start at the north pole and end at the south pole.

Magnetic field lines do not intersect each other, because there cant be two directions of the magnetic field
at any one point.

The degree of closeness of the field lines depends upon the strength of the magnetic field. Stronger the
field, closer are the field lines.

In order to find the magnetic field due to a coil, it is held in a vertical plane and is made to pass through a
smooth cardboard in such a way that the centre (O) of the coil lies at the cardboard. A current is passed
through the coil and iron filings are sprinkled on the cardboard. These iron filings arrange themselves in a
pattern similar to one shown in the figure. This pattern represents the magnetic field lines due to the coil.

Q36 The heating effect of current is obtained by transformation of electrical 5

energy in heat energy. Just as mechanical energy used to overcome friction is
covered into heat, in the same way, electrical energy is converted into heat
energy when an electric current flows through a resistance wire. The heat
produced in a conductor, when a current flows through it is found to depend
directly on (a) strength of current (b) resistance of the conductor (c) time for
which the current flows.
The mathematical expression is given by H = I 2 Rt.
The electrical fuse, electrical heater, electric iron, electric geyser etc. all are
based on the heating effect of current.
(i) What are the properties of heating element?

(ii) What are the properties of electric fuse?

(iii) Write the joule law for heating effect.
(iv) What will happen to heating effect of wire if the cross section area of
wire is get doubled.(keeping other physical parameter constant).
Q39. The lenses forms different types of images when object placed at different locations. When a ray is (4)
incident parallel to the principal axis, then after refraction, it passes through the focus or appears to
come from the focus.
When a ray goes through the optical center of the lens, it passes without any deviation. If the object
is placed between focus and optical center of the convex lens, erect and magnified image is formed.
As the object is brought closer to the convex lens from infinity to focus, the image moves away
from the convex lens from focus to infinity. Also the size of image goes on increasing and the
image is always real and inverted.
A concave lens always gives a virtual, erect and diminished image irrespective to the position of
the object.

(i) The location of image formed by a convex lens when the object is placed at infinity is
(a) at focus
(b) at 2F
(c) at optical center
(d) between Fand 2F

Answer A
(ii) When the object is placed at the focus of concave lens, the image formed is
(a) real and smaller
(b) virtual and inverted

(iii) The size of image formed by a convex lens when the object is placed at the focus of convex
lens is
(a) small
(b) point in size
(c) highly magnified
(d) same as that of object

Answer (c)
(iv) When the object is placed at 2F in front of convex lens, the location of image is
(a) at F
(b) at 2 F on the other side
(c) at infinity
(d) between F and optical center
