Spoken Word Poetry

I. INTRODUCTION

A genre of poem that takes its origins from performing onstage while mixing traditional oral
storytelling with theater, acting, and at times music, spoken word poetry has overtaken and
overlapped with so many genres of literature. Spoken word poetry that tackles environmental issues
becomes even deeper and more impactful to its target audience when it utilizes basic elements such
as repetition, rhyming of words, symbolisms, figures of speech, spontaneous and impromptu word
play, technical and casual language, and comedy. These elements give voice and emphasis to the
written poem and allow listeners to connect and internalize the significant human experiences,
emotions, message, and authentic views being conveyed by the poem.

Dig deep to your inner poet, your inner activist, your inner performer, and present a poem that would
touch the hearts of others with your words and ignite people to initiate positive actions towards the
environment and others.

SPOKEN WORD POETRY ON CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
1. English

A. Spoken Word Poetry Piece

Create a poem with a minimum of five (5) stanzas made up of four lines each with the topic
Caring for the Environment and Humanity.

“We Are Nature's Enemy”

In our lives, we sometimes get lost on our way.

We get blinded by our ambitions.

Making more and more constructions

Concrete jungles grow as forests fall.

While we construct our wall, nature sobs.

Can you not tell? We are becoming nature's enemy.

Tearing apart the roots of our unity

In wanting more, we have lost our grace.

So now let's wake up to nature's embrace.

The winds whisper, the oceans cry,

Mountains stand as witnesses to our reckless sky.

But in every sunset, in every tree

Nature says out loud, “Why won't you set me free? ”

Our future is intertwined with Mother Earth.

A chance for restoration, a second rebirth

For us to heal the wounds and to mend the ties

Before nature says her final goodbye

Let's rewrite this book, set free from unkindness.

Accept your stewardship duty to restore our sacredness.

Because of nature, we all blend.

We are not enemies, but we are one till the end.

B. Description/Analysis
1. What is the poem about?
2. What symbolisms are used in the poem?
3. What mood or tone is used in your poem?
4. What theme could be derived from your poem?
5. How is the poem a reflection of life and how is it significant to the human experience?

1. What is the poem about?

The poem discusses the negative impact that human activity has on the environment. It
emphasizes the loss and grief it causes by showing the creation of concrete jungles and being
separated from nature as a figurative wall. The poem acknowledges the sorrow that elements like
the winds, oceans, and mountains represent and calls for a return to nature. It demands a change
in viewpoint, highlighting the need of environmental stewardship and an opening of opportunity for
repair before permanent damage is done. The main takeaway is one of hope and a request that
people understand how intertwined they are with the environment.

2. What symbolisms are use in the poem?

Concrete Jungles

- represents the ways in which natural habitats are frequently destroyed in the process of
urbanization, industrialization, and human growth. The creation of concrete jungles is a
symbol of the disappearance of nature and the transformation of organic environments into
man-made constructions.

Walls

- A metaphorical word that describes the separation between humans and nature.

Natures sobbing

- This symbolizes the environmental distress that is being caused by us humans.

Unity and Grace

- symbolizes the connection that binds nature and humanity. The poem emphasizes the need
to regain unity with nature and suggests that ambition has taken over over ethical behavior,
leading to humanity's loss of grace.

Second Rebirth

- symbolizes the possibilities of renewal and restoration. The idea of a second rebirth means
an opportunity for people to improve their relationship with nature, heal environmental
wounds and move towards a more sustainable coexistence.

3. What mood or tone is used in your poem?

This poem expresses a sense of urgency and worries about how human activity affects the
environment. A tone of sadness for the loss of nature combines with an appeal to reawaken a
sense of responsibility toward the natural world. The tone of the poem changes as it goes along,
becoming more cheerful as it refers to the possibility of restoration and regeneration through a
renewed relationship with nature. All in all, a variety of feelings are present in the atmosphere,
ranging from sadness and regret to an appeal for balance in the environment and positive
transformation.

4. What theme could derive from your poem?

The theme of this poem could be reflection and awakening because, in this poem, it suggests a
theme of self-awareness and awakening to the environmental impact of human action, urging us
people to reconsider our relationships and our mother earth.

5. How is the poem a reflection of life and how is it significant to the human experience?
The poem discusses how humans and the environment are connected, illustrating the effects of
human activity on the environment with metaphors like "Concrete Jungles" and "Walls". As a call for
awareness, the poem encourages people to recognize their responsibility for the environment and
points out the interconnectedness of human experiences with the well-being of the environment. It
demonstrates the emotions of loss and grief caused by environmental degradation, while also
emphasizing hope and renewal with the concept of a "second rebirth”.

A. Pagsulat ng Talumpati

pangungusap.
klima, at polusyon.

convenient at abot-kaya.
tao at hayop.

What do you think is the message of God to you behind this lesson?

Answer: Minimum of 15 lines for each.

On Christians’ and Man’s Role in Caring for the Environment

Which part of the lesson is speaking to you?I appreciate how this lesson serves
as a reminder that our existence in this environment comes with a responsibility. As
humans, we are entrusted with the role of caring for God's creation. It's crucial to
recognize that if we neglect this responsibility, there's a high probability that the
elements around us, which we often take for granted, may disappear. What are
your personal insights about Caring for the Environment?Given the role of
caring for our environment, my insights emphasize that environmental stewardship
is grounded in the moral obligation for humanity to conserve and protect the
environment. This concept encourages individuals to integrate environmental
considerations into their moral and ethical perspectives, recognizing the
interconnectedness of our actions with the well-being of the environment. Why
should Christians take a more active rol in caring for the environment? I believe
in the saying that we are stewards of the earth, summoned by God to “work it and
take care of it." This means that God gave us the role of taking care of his creations.
Our uses of the earth must be designed to conserve and renew it rather than
deplete or destroy it. I also believe that not only we Christians should exert more
effort in taking care of our environment, but whether your religion is like Muslims,
born-again, Islamic, et cetera, we should all take care of our environment to
minimize environmental degradation, preserve biodiversity, manage climate
change, and guarantee a healthy and sustainable Earth for present and future
generations. How is the message of the Gospels related to caring for the
environment? In the verse Gen 2:15, it says “The Lord God took the man and put him
in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it." This verse is similar to my
answer to the last question, but let me further explain this verse. This verse,
Genesis 2:15, emphasizes environmental stewardship by showing humanity as
entrusted stewards tasked with caring for the environment. By highlighting a
shared responsibility between humanity and God in maintaining the world that was
created, it establishes a moral necessity for achieving a balance between ensuring
environmental well-being and the use of resources for livelihood. How does caring
for the environment make us closer to God and others, and bring glory to God?
As human beings are given the role of taking care of God’s creation by appreciating
the beauty of the natural world and knowing our moral obligations to safeguard the
environment, we are strengthening our connection to God and other people. This
commitment acknowledges God's blessings, demonstrates characteristics that are
perfectly aligned with His nature, and ultimately glorifies Him through careful and
kind stewardship. What do you think is the message of God to you behind this
lesson? In my understanding of this lesson, it seems that God's message is a
reminder of the purpose and role that each human being possesses in this world.
God has entrusted us with the responsibility of caring for His creations. This
responsibility is not only a duty but also holds the promise of benefiting humanity.
By acknowledging our role as stewards of God's creations, we are called to actively
participate in the preservation and nurturing of the world around us for the
well-being and prosperity of all.

On Why Should We be Caring About the Environment

Which part of the lesson is speaking to you? Caring for our environment is crucial
to support the regeneration and longevity of essential elements like plants and
trees. This not only provides immediate benefits, such as cleaner air and water for
us, but also ensures a healthier environment for future generations to enjoy. In
essence, our environmental efforts have a lasting impact on both present and
future well-being. What are your personal insights about Caring for the
Environment? In my view, caring for the environment entails actively promoting its
health and longevity. This involves practical actions like reducing plastic use,
conserving energy, recycling, planting trees, supporting eco-friendly products, and
advocating for conservation policies. Incorporating these practices into our daily
lives not only benefits our immediate surroundings but also contributes to a
sustainable and thriving environment for present and future generations. Why
should Christians take a more active role in creation care? It is important for not
only Christians but all of us human beings living on this Earth to be active in caring
for our environment because, as I have said, it ensures the well-being of current
and future generations. Moreover, a clean and well-preserved environment
contributes to human health, supports ecosystems, and enhances overall quality
of life. How is the message of the Gospels related to caring for the
environment? In the Gospel, it motivates people to appreciate the beauty of the
creation of God. This appreciation can lead to wanting to protect and take care of
our environment as an expression of thankfulness for the blessings God provided
for us. How does caring for the environment make us closer to God and others,
and bring glory to God? God has given humans the duty of taking care of His
creation. It is seen as an act of obedience and devotion toward God to carry out this
obligation. As for the people around us, taking care of the environment often calls
for teamwork, promoting a feeling of shared responsibility and community. Working
together to preserve the environment represents the values of love and
cooperation and strengthens social ties. What do you think is the message of
God to you behind this lesson? I think the message of God in this lesson is that
taking care of our environment is important not only because He gave us the role to
take care of it but also because we need it for our own good. Taking care of the
environment can help us to continue having a fulfilling life for ourselves and for the
people who will live on this Earth in the future.

Reflecting: Do internal processing and relate the passage with your own understanding and
experiences.

How do you feel after meditating on the lessons, passages or story?

Do you see yourself as a responsible steward of God’s creation? Why?

What are some challenges or obstacles that you encounter that prevent you from caring for the
environment?
If you practice care for the environment, what benefits are you likely to gain from this experience?

Answer: Minimum of 15 lines

How do you feel after meditating on the lessons, passages, or story? After
meditating on the lessons, I feel more motivated to be more active in taking care of
our environment because it made me reflect and reminded me what will happen
after we do not take care of the beautiful environment around us. It also reminded
me that all human beings have a purpose, and it is to take care of the things around
us for our benefit and for the benefit of the future. Do you see yourself as a
responsible steward of God’s creation? Why? I could say that I am, but obviously,
no one is perfect, which means that yes, I have done things that harm our
environment, like using single-use plastic, not unplugging chargers, not turning off
the lights and fan. However, I am trying to become more aware of the things I do and
am working to remove these bad habits. On the other hand, I can say that I have
never littered in my life because my parents raised me that way. I also make an effort
to reduce waste by always bringing my own water bottles and utensils. What are
some challenges or obstacles that you encounter that prevent you from caring
for the environment? Using things that are very convenient but harmful to our
environment is a common practice. One example of this is the use of single-use
plastic, which has a significant impact on our environment, including pollution and
harm to wildlife. Another example is the influence of fast fashion. I am guilty of this
because I buy a lot of trendy clothes, and eventually, the trend fades. I am left with
clothes that I no longer like, as my preference was solely based on the trend,
contributing to environmental issues like textile waste. If you practice care for the
environment, what benefits are you likely to gain from this experience? I have
learned that taking care of our environment benefits our personal well-being.
Engaging in environmentally friendly practices can improve mental and physical
well-being. Especially for us students, we gain environmental awareness of global
environmental challenges, fostering a sense of responsibility and empowerment to
contribute to positive change.

Sharing: Recall a personal experience related to the lesson. Narrate this experience and
share how you responded to the situation. Then, you can also cite ways on how you can go
about it next time you would encounter that situation again.
Is there a personal story related to the lesson being tackled? What lesson did you learn from this
experience? Narrate this story.

Is there a certain environmental issue that you feel strongly about? Why?

How do you plan to take part in addressing this environmental problem or issue?

How can you as a student influence the people around you to have that drive to care for the
environment?

What is your specific plan of actions to further develop this trait of caring for the environment?
Enumerate some ways and strategies.

Answer: Minimum of 15 lines

Is there a personal story related to the lesson being tackled? What lesson did
you learn from this experience? A personal story about why caring for the
environment is important is from a trip last year when we went to a beach. I was so
excited to swim in the water, but when we arrived, my family and I were shocked by
what we saw. The beach was filled with trash, the water looked brown and green,
and the sand was covered in plastic and chip wrappers, etc. It was so disgusting. At
that time, my family and I discussed how the trash could affect the fish and,
subsequently, us human beings due to pollution. The trash could potentially poison
the fish, and if we consume these contaminated fish, it could pose health risks.
Additionally, the abundance of trash could deplete the fish population, impacting
our future access to this food source. Is there a certain environmental issue that
you feel strongly about? Why? An environmental issue I feel strongly about is
pollution. Firstly, it harms our ecosystem, damaging the air, water, and soil.
Secondly, human health is affected. Being exposed to pollutants can lead to
various health problems, including respiratory issues, cardiovascular illnesses, and
many more. Lastly, water contamination, as I shared earlier, is a concern. Polluted
bodies of water can affect aquatic life, poisoning and killing them. How do you plan
to take part in addressing this environmental problem or issue? I would take
action by first educating myself more about this issue and then educating others
about what I know to my family and friends. Also, influencing them to reduce waste
like reminding them to bring their own cutlery and water bottles, reminding them
not to buy unnecessary things, and buying more eco-friendly products. Lastly, is to
conserve energy. I myself am guilty of this because I sometimes forget to turn off
the light or fan when I go out of my room but I am trying my best to be more mindful
and remember to turn them off and remove this bad habit of mine. How can you as
a student influence the people around you to have that drive to care for the
environment? I would propose eco-friendly challenges first to my friends and
family. For example, one day without using plastic products or using only
eco-friendly products for a day and giving a prize to the winner who can do it
successfully. This can help them experience what it will feel like doing these kinds
of stuff and if they will like the challenge they can continue it on their own. What is
your specific plan of actions to further develop this trait of caring for the
environment? Enumerate some ways and strategies.

Strategies
- Start cleaning up at home and eventually you will carry this trait in your
everyday life
- Playing game that are about the environment
- Outdoor camping
- Joining tree planting progams

Praying: Take a prayer out of your head and flow the words onto paper. Ask God to speak to
you and pour your heart out.

Is there something that you would want to thank God for?

What are the things and questions that bother you that you would want God to know or answer?

What are the hopes, desires, and questions in your heart about this area that you would want to
bring to God?

Write a prayer to God asking Him to Help you be optimistic and grateful.

Answer: Minimum of 15 lines

Thank you, Lord, for blessing us with this beautiful environment that provides all
the resources for a happy and prosperous life. I am grateful for my wonderful family,
their love, and care. Thanks for the abundance of everyday food and the comforting
place we call home.

As we move forward, Lord, can we redeem ourselves from harming nature? Will my
future be brighter, and will I become a better person? Will dance be a part of my life
again? Can I still have a chance at academic redemption? I hope for a better
environment globally and personal growth. May global issues find resolution,
making the world a better place. I desire personal redemption academically and
overall, aspiring to be the best version of myself. I wish for the safety and health of
my friends, family, and pamangkin. Lord, grant peace and understanding among
those I love. Help those facing life challenges find strength in Your presence. May
my desires align with the path You've set for me. Lastly, God, I have questions about
the purpose and meaning of my current struggles. Please guide me to understand
the path You've chosen for me.

Dear Lord I look to You for guidance when faced with difficulties and confusion. Give
me the courage to be positive and express thanks in any situation. Encourage a
heart full of gratitude in me by helping me recognize the blessings in every day. I
depend on Your grace to lead me to see things from a more positive, optimistic
perspective. Amen.
