Introduction:

Firstly before we divulge into Tropical Cyclone Freddy we first have to define what is a tropical
cyclone. A tropical cyclone is a intense storm that originates over warm tropical oceans and has
maximum sustained wind speeds exceeding 119 km/h and are characterized by heavy rainfall.

Tropical cyclone Freddie was a tropical cyclone that stretched across the Indian Ocean for more than
five weeks in February end March 2023. it occurred from 04 February 2023 till the 15 th of March
2023.

The strength of a tropical cyclone is measured using Sapphire-Simpson and buffered scales.

Sapphire-Simpson scale is a hurricane wind scale which classifies hurricanes which in the Western
Hemisphere are tropical cyclones that exceed the intensities of tropical depressions and tropical
storms. it is a scale that is a 1 to 5 rating based only on a hurricanes maximum sustained wind speed.
Beaufort scale is a scale of wind speed based on visual estimation of the winds effects ranging from
force 0 (Less than 1 knot or 1km/h) to force 12 (64 knots or 118km/h and above).

According to research done by the Joint Warning Centre [JTWC] it was estimated that Freddy’s peak
strength was equivalent to category 5 strength on the Sapphire-Simpson scale. Research done by
Africa environment wiki focus showed that the buffet scales of tropical cyclone Freddy were up to
250 km/h.
