Calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI)


a. Objective: This station aims to assess your skills in recording weight (in kgs), height (in cms) and
calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI)
b. Scenario: A 45 year old healthy male sitting in front of you.
c. Task:
i. Measure the weight and explain the procedure
ii. Measure the height & explain the procedure
iii. Calculate BMI & mention the class (as per the Asian classification of BMI)

Procedure to record weight


5.  Set the scale at zero reading 2.5 1 0
 Have the patient remove shoes, heavy outer clothing (jacket) and
empty pockets (cell phones, iPods) to the extent possible.
 Ask the patient to step on the scale platform, facing away from the
scale read out, with both feet on the platform, and remain still with
arms hanging naturally at side and looking forward
 Read the weight value to the nearest 0.1 (1/10) Kg
 Record the weight value

Procedure to record Height


6.  Have the patient remove shoes, hat, and hair ornaments /buns 3.0 1.5 0
/braids to the extent possible
 Ask the patient to stand on the footplate or uncarpeted floor with
back against stadiometer rule
 Make sure that the student’s legs are straight, arms are at sides, and
shoulders are relaxed
 Assure the back of the student’s body touches/has contact with the
stadiometer at some point, preferably with heels, buttocks, upper
back and head touching the measuring surface
 Assure that the student’s body is in a straight line (mid-axillary line
parallel to the stadiometer)
 Assure the head is in the appropriate position (Frankfort plane)
 Lower the headpiece until it is touches the crown of the head firmly,
compressing the hair
 Position yourself so that your eyes are parallel with the head piece
and read the measurement to the nearest 0.1 cm
 Record the result

Procedure of calculating BMI


7. After collecting the height & weight of the patient BMI is calculated by BMI = 1 0.5 0
(weight in kilograms) divided by (height in meters X height in meters)
8. Analyse the results for any abnormal values 1 0.5 0
9. Ask the patient to wear his shoes & other accessories if they were removed 0.5 NA 0

10. Ensure that the patient is comfortable & thank him

Demonstration of wearing a face mask before entering the COVID-19 ward and doffing
a. Objective: This station aims to assess your skills in wearing a face mask with strings as well as your
communication skills in educating a small group
b. Scenario: Use the face mask (with strings) lying in front of you to educate the office staff of medical
college on how to wear it effectively and its doffing
c. Task:
i. Greet the office staff
ii. Demonstrate procedure of wearing a face mask (with strings) and explain
iii. Close the session appropriately

Procedure of wearing a face mask
5.  Clean your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer before 5 0.5 0

 Make sure there are no obvious tears or holes in either side of
the mask
 Determine which side of the mask is the top. The side of the
mask that has a stiff bendable edge is the top and is meant
to mould to the shape of your nose.
 Determine which side of the mask is the front. The coloured side
of the mask is usually the front and should face away from you,
while the white side touches your face
 Hold the mask in your hand with the nosepiece or top of the
mask at fingertips, allowing the headbands to hang freely below
hands
 Bring the mask to your nose level and pull the top strap over
your head so that it rests over the crown of your head & tie
 Pull the bottom strap over your head so that it rests at the nape
of your neck & tie
 Mould or pinch the stiff edge to the shape of your nose
 Pull the bottom of the mask over your mouth and chin
Procedure of doffing face mask
6.  Clean your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer before 3 0.5 0

 Avoid touching the front of the mask. The front of the mask is
contaminated. Only touch the band.
 Untie the bottom bow first
 Then untie the top bow
 Pull the mask away from you as the ties are loosened
 Throw the mask in the trash

Paediatric counselling on immunization

Q-Amother with 4 month old infant comes to immunization clinic, after enquiring she reveals that
the child has taken vaccination upto 10 weeks (after birth). Counsel the mother for rest of
immunization schedule that needs to be followed and any AEFIs associated with those vaccines.

past 24 hours.

i) Demonstrate procedure to make ORS
ii) Educate the mother about diarrhoea danger signs and alternative to ORS

a) Objective:- The station aims to assess your skill in packing vaccine carrier as well as your

b) Scenario:- use vaccine carrier lying in front of you to to educate MPHW(F) on how to pack
vaccine carrier

them from touching ice packs
ii. Place the plastic bag in the centre away from the ice packs
iii. Place from pad on the top of ice packs
iv. close the lid tightly and securely

b. Scenario: Use the measuring tape to measure the MUAC (in cms) of an adult
c. Task:
i. Make the appropriate surface markings
ii. Demonstrate procedure of accurately measuring the MUAC and explain

Procedure to record MUAC
5. Bend the left arm at a 90 degree angle. 4 2 0
6. Find the top of the shoulder and the tip of the elbow
7. Keep the tape at eye level and place it at the top of the shoulder. Put your
right thumb on the tape where it meets the tip of the elbow (endpoint)
8. Find the middle of the upper arm by carefully folding the endpoint to the
top edge of the tape. Place your left thumb on the point where the tape
folds (midpoint). Mark the midpoint with a finger or pen.
9. Straighten the arm and wrap the tape around the arm at the midpoint 4 2 0
10. Place the tape through the window and correct the tape tension 0
11. Read the measurement in centimetres (cm) in the window where the 0
arrows point inward.
12. Record the measurement to the nearest 0.1 cm and record the colour 0
