MASS FLOW RATE/FLUX

FUNDAMENTALS It is the amount of mass flowing

through a cross-section per unit time.

OF (kg/s)

FLUID m= V

VOLUME FLOW RATE/FLUX

FLOW It is the volume of fluid flowing through

a cross-section per unit time. (m³/s)

V = Q = Av
During a steady-flow process, the total

MASS BALANCE amount of mass contained within a

control volume does not change with
time.

FOR STEADY The conservation of mass principle

FLOW
requires that the total amount of mass
entering a control volume is equal to the
total amount of mass leaving it.

PROCESS Conservation of Mass Principle

m in = m out
Problem 1
A garden hose attached with a nozzle is used to fill a 10-gal bucket. The inner diameter of the
hose is 2cm, and it reduces to 0.80cm at the nozzle exit. If it takes 50sec to fill the bucket with
water, determine the following:

a. The volume flux of water through the hose.

b. The mass flow rate of water through the hose.
c. The average velocity of water at the nozzle exit.
d. The average velocity of water at the hose.
Problem 2
In the rectilinear chamber, section 1 has a diameter of 4in and the flow in is 2cfs. Section 2 has
a diameter of 3in and the low-out is 36fps average velocity. Compute the following:

a. The average velocity at section 3.

b. The volume flowrate at section 3 if the diameter at section 3 is 1in.
c. Determine if the flow in section 3 is in or out.
Problem 3
A 250mm diameter pipe, 2750m long supplies water at a velocity of 2.4m/s.

a. What is the discharge in gpm?

b. What is the discharge in mgd?
c. What is the weight flux?
d. What is the mass flux?
e. Estimate the population that can be served assuming a per capita consumption of 150L/day.
Problem 4

AND 32.4s.
