SIGNIFICANT DIGITS

The significant figures (also called significant

digits) of a number are those digits that carry
meaning contributing to its precision. The
significant digits of a number begin with first
nonzero digit and ends with the final digit whether
zero or non-zero. There are three rules on
determining how many significant figures are in a
REMAINDER AND FACTOR THEOREM
number:

1. Non-zero digits are always significant.

2. Any zeros between two significant digits are

significant.

3. A final zero or trailing zeros in the decimal

portion ONLY are significant.

GREATEST COMMON FACTOR

The greatest common factor (GCF) of a

set of numbers is the largest factor that
all the numbers share. For example, 12,
20, and 24 have two common factors: 2
and 4. The largest is 4, so we say that
the GCF of 12, 20, and 24 is 4.

Ex. Greatest Common Factor of 12 and 16

LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE

The least common multiple (LCM) is the

smallest number that two or more numbers
can divide into evenly. To find the LCM,
you can use the prime factorization method
or list the multiples of each number.

Ex. Least Common Multiple of 4 and 5
