Question 7
According to Preston Whyte among Nguni-speaking people, marriage is held quite
highly, in contrary to this however is the high regard of baring children as a form of
insurance for the future. Being a single parent is therefore not frowned upon or
deemed unacceptable because having a child is held in higher regard than being
married. Preston Whyte then also explains that the reasons for single parenthood in
Durban among Nguni-speaking people can be subjected to the high cost of
marriage, the lack of pressure to get married, men being unfit to marry due to lack of
education, lack of negative sanctioning towards premarital pregnancies, peer group
pressure to engage in intimate relations and an increase in independent living in
women.
Question 8
When I a married couple come to agreement to reside I separate locations for the
benefit of work, they will live apart for either short or long period and then return
home after. The spouses come to this agreement to assure that they receive the full
benefits of their jobs but also has its side effects or issues. Some of the issues
involve financial strain, owning sperate homes costs more than it would to own one
home and reside in it together, another issue can be strain on kids, the children not
seeing one of their parents over periods of times may cause issues to develop in the
relationship between the child and parent. The main caregiver or provider of the child
may also struggle as they deal with a larger threshold of pressure and emotional
strain. Distance and time apart may lead to loneliness and separation due to loss of
feelings and constant isolation from spouse. Commuter marriages however may only
have a increase in success when both spouses have come to an complete
agreement on how they will structure the relationship and housing.
