Legend of the Seven Princesses, History of the Origin of the Name Dumai City

Of the several legendary stories in Riau Province, the legend of the Seventh Princess may
be one of the most famous.

The legend of the Seven Princesses comes from Dumai City , and is the origin of the
name of the city .

In the past, in the city of Dumai stood a kingdom called Seri Bunga Tanjung. This
kingdom is led by a queen named Cik Sima. It is said that Cik Sima had 7 beautiful
daughters.

However, among the seven daughters, the youngest, Putri Mayang Sari, is the most
beautiful. Mayang Sari's beauty is even famous in neighboring countries.

One day, they bathed in the Lubuk Sarong Umai river. Too busy bathing, they didn't
realize that they were being watched by a prince .

The prince was Empang Kuala from a neighboring kingdom. It is said that the prince of
Empang Kuala was passing by and accidentally saw the seven princesses.

Amazed and stunned by their beauty, however, Empang Kuala's attention was focused on
Mayang Sari. Empang Kuala immediately returned to his kingdom and sent an envoy to
the Seri Bunga Tanjung kingdom, to propose to Mayang Sari.
However, according to custom, it is mandatory that the eldest daughter gets married first
so she refuses the prince's proposal.

Insisting, Empang Kuala still wanted Mayang Sari to be married. Not wanting to be
outdone, Cik Sima remained firm in her existing traditions

Empang Kuala was finally furious and sent troops to attack Seri Bunga Tanjung.

War between the two kingdoms broke out. Cik Sima, who was afraid that something would
happen to her seven daughters, decided to evacuate them to a forest where they were
hidden in a hole covered by a roof made of earth and blocked by trees. Don't forget that
Cik Sima provided her seven daughters with food for three months.

In the midst of the war, Cik Sima's troops were starting to be pushed, many victims were
falling, the situation of the kingdom was in ruins, so Cik Sima asked for help from a genie
who was meditating on the Hulu Sungai Umai hill, and the genie agreed.

When Prince Empang and his troops were resting at night near the lower reaches of the
Umai River. Suddenly thousands of mangroves fell on Prince Empang and his troops. In
just a matter of seconds, Prince Empang's troops were paralyzed and Prince Empang was
injured.

Not wanting to lose the moment, Cik Sima sent a messenger to offer peace to Empang
Kuala. Realizing that this war had been going on for a long time and had achieved nothing,
Empang Kuala agreed and the war ended.

Not long after the war ended, Cik Sima checked on the condition of her daughters. How
shocked Cik Sima was to see that the seven daughters were already lifeless due to
starvation.

From there, Cik Sima regretted her actions which resulted in Cik Sima losing hope in life
and falling ill and in the end Cik Sima died.

The name Dumai itself is taken from the word "d'umai" which Prince Empang Kuala
always said when he saw the beauty of Princess Mayang Sari. Also taken as an oil refinery
in the Dumai area, the Putri Tujuh Oil Refinery.
