STARTING

1. General

Start system controls the starting of engine on ground or in flight.

2. System Description

Control of start is the operation of starting control panel through the engine at the top of flight
compartment, and is completed by DC start control unit GCU which controls the DC starter
generator to drive high-pressure rotor of engine.

3. Component Description

Start system is mainly composed of start control panel and DC starter generator.

Start control panel is equipped with start button, start selection knob and air ignition switch.

Start button have two mode choices: start mode and cold crank mode.

4. System Operation

A. Cold crank of engine

Cold crank of engine is required in case of restarting when the first starting is
unsuccessful. It aims to discharge the remaining fuel within the engine, and blow the
engine for cooling. Before restart is required when the aircraft parks too long, cold crank
of engine must be performed, obeying non-oil and non-ignition during the cold crank.

Cold crank state must be selected in case of inspection, oil sealing starting or unsealing
starting; non-oil and non-ignition are obeyed in case of inspection and oil sealing starting;
only oil will be supplied without ignition in case of unsealing starting.

B. Engine start

Firstly start the engine at one side, and then start the engine at the other side.

CRANKING

1. General

The engine start is accomplished by the DC starter generator which is installed on the engine.
The starter generator is controlled by the generator control unit (GCU).

When the speed of the starter generator reaches 5750 rpm ± 250 rpm, the starter generator is
automatically disengaged by the GCU, and starts generating power.

2. System Description

A. Start Power Supply

(1) Ground Power Supply

Insert the DC ground power connector to supply power for LH/RH main DC buses.

(2) Battery power supply

Connect the LH/RH battery power supplies and the switches in parallel operation to
make RH battery power supplying power for LH/RH main DC buses.

(3) APU power supply

Start the APU. When the APU is in normal operation, engage the APU generator as
well as the left and right batteries to supply power.

(4) Cross start power supply

After one engine is started, the DC starter generator of the same side is in power
generating state, then engage the left and right batteries.

B. Functions

(1) Cold crank of engine

CAUTION: AFTER THE COMPLETION OF COLD CRANK EACH TIME, KEEP

STILL FOR 3 MIN.

During the cold crank, the engine is not fuelled or ignited. Cold crank must be
conducted when the first start fails or before restarting the engine after long time
parking. The purpose of the cold crank is to drain the residual fuel in the engine and
to air cool the engine.

During inspection, preserve start and depreserve start, the engine must be in cold
crank state. For inspection or preserve start, the engine is neither supplied with fuel

nor ignited, and for depreserve start, the engine is fuelled but not ignited.

(2) Engine start

Firstly start the engine at one side, and then start the engine at the other side.

(3) Air ignition of engine

When the engine needs to be ignited continuously in flight, connect the “IGN IN
FLIGHT” switch on the start control panel can the igniter work continuously. This kind
of working mode affects the service life of ignition electric nozzle of engine. Starting
of engine in the air can be allowed only when the automatic ignition function of EEC
is invalid and under the following complicate weather conditions: flying in the frozen,
rainy or foggy weathers; flying in the turbulent flow.

(4) Automatic ignition of EEC

When engine flameout is detected, EEC will provide an ignition signal to connect the
ignition circuit. Engine can re-ignite automatically.

3. System Operation

A. Preparations before starting

(1) Connect the DC ground power supply, examine and make sure the power supply
system works normally, and connect the “START CONT” (01K), “R AIR IGNT” (03K)
and “L AIR IGNT” (04K) on the LH DC circuit breaker panel.

(2) Other preparations

(a) Set the condition lever at the “CUT OFF” position.

(b) Set the power lever at the “G. I (Ground Idle)” position.

(c) Engage the EEC.

(d) Open the engine fuel shutoff valve.

(e) Power on the emergency fuel booster pump.

(f) The fuel inlet pressure warning light goes off.

(g) Set the ECS at the “OFF” position.

(h) Select the start mode for the starter generator.

(i) Select the automatic temperature control mode for the oil cooler.

(j) Set the start selector switch at the “L (R) START” position.

(k) Disengage the generator.

B. Start (taking the left engine start for example)

Set the start selector switch (02K) at the “L START” position, and press the “START”
button (08K) at the engine control panel. The relay (12K) starts working and leads to:

· The relay (10K) works;

· The START button (08K) comes on;

· The time relay (19K) works;

· The hole P of the left engine GCU is electrical.

After the relay (10K) operates, it activates the left igniter (14K) and ignites the left engine.
When the time relay (19K) works, the hole Q on the left and right engine GCUs and the
APU GCU are supplied, which functions as the generator current-restricting signal. Then
the “START” button (08K) comes on and enables the relay (12K) to continue operating.
When the starter generator reaches 5750 RPM ± 250 RPM, the relay (12K) stops working
and the START button (08K) goes off. The left engine igniter (14K) stops working. After 2s,
the time relay (19K) opens and results in the signals to left and right engine GCU and the
APU GCU disappear. The current restriction is removed. The engine start ends.

C. In-flight Ignition (Taking the left engine start for example)

Following engagement of the left in-flight ignition switch (06K), the left engine igniter (14K)
starts operation to ignite the left engine.

D. Set the start selector switch (02K) at “L COLD CRANK” position, and press the START
button (08K) at the engine control panel, leading to:

· The relay (12K) works.

· The START button (08K) comes on.

· The time relay (19K) works.

· The P hole of the left engine GCU is electrical.

When the time relay (19K) works, the hole Q on the left and right engine GCUs and the
APU GCU are supplied, which functions as the generator current-restricting signal. Then
the “START” button (08K) comes on and enables the relay (12K) to continue operating.
When the starter generator reaches 5750 RPM ± 250 RPM, the positive electricity in the
R hole of the left engine GCU disappears. the relay (12K) stops working and the START
button (08K) goes off. After 2 s, the time relay (19K) opens and results in the signals to
left engine GCU disappear.

E. Start over

Set the start selector switch (02K) at “OFF” position.
