PRESENT SIMPLE PAST SIMPLE

Form Form

Base form / verb + -s verb + -ed / irregular verbs

PRESENT CONTINUOUS PAST CONTINUOUS

Form Form

am / is / are + verb + -ing was / were + verb + -ing

They are playing now. They were playing at 10.30.

She is talking with you. She was talking with you.

FUTURE SIMPLE FUTURE CONTINUOUS

Form Form

will + base form of the verb will + be + verb + -ing

Example Example

I will go tomorrow. I will be flying to London.

BE GOING TO FUTURE PERFECT SIMPLE

Form Form

am / is / are + going to+ base form of the verb will + have + past participle

Example Example

He is going to meet us tomorrow. He will have finished by then.

PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE

have / has + past participle

Uses

1 An action that started in the past and continues until the present.

2 An action that took place at an unspecified time in the past and is relevant to the present.

Example

We have stayed in this hotel.

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS

Form

have / has + been + verb + -ing

Use

An action that started and is still going on at the present moment or whose results are still
apparent.

Example

We are tired. We have been hiking all day.

PAST PERFECT SIMPLE PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS

had + past participle had + been + verb + -ing

Use Use

An action that took place before a specific An action that continued for some time

TIME CLAUSES

Time clauses are often used in Zero and First Conditional sentences, where they replace the if
clause. Words and expressions like when, as soon as, the moment ( that ), etc are followed by
the Present Simple.

Examples

I take flowers when I visit a friend.

I will take my medicine as soon as I wake up.


WISH CLAUSES

Form

I wish / If only + Past Simple

Use

A situation the speaker is unhappy about in the present.

Example

I wish / If only our town had more vegan restaurants.

Form

I wish / If only + Past Perfect Simple

Use

Regret about a past action o situation.

Example

I wish / If only we had gone to hospital on time.

Form

I wish / If only + could / would + base form of the verb

Use

A desire for something in the future.

Example

I wish we could do something to help.
