Tutorial 1
1. An analog sensor converts flow linearly so that flow from 0 to 300 m 3/h becomes a current from 0 to 50 mA. Calculate the current for a flow of 225 m3/h. 2. A process temperature control system is shown in Figure 1. The relays close at |1.5| V & open at |1.1| V. This means that one relay will close at +1.5 V and the other at 1.5 V. The relay that closes at +1.5 V will open at +1.1 V while the other will open at 1.1 V (there is a deadband). The amplifier has a gain of 10, the reference is 3 V, and the sensor outputs 150 mV/C. Calculate the temperatures at which the heater turns on and off and at which the cooler turns on and off.

Figure 1 3. Suppose a liquid level ranging from 5.5 to 8.6 m is linearly converted to pneumatic pressure ranging from 3 to 15 psi. What pressure will result from a level of 7.2 m? What level does a pressure of 4.7 psi represent?

4. A controller output is a 4 to 20 mA signal that drives a valve to control flow. The relation between current and flow is Q = 45 I 2 gal/min. where I is in mA. What is the flow for 12 mA? What current produces a flow of 162 gal/min? 5. A level sensor inputs a range from 4.50 to 10.6 ft and outputs a pressure range from 3 to 15 psi. Find a linear equation between level and pressure. What is the pressure for the level of 9.2 ft? 6. A temperature sensor has a static transfer function of 0.15 mV/C and time constant of 3.3 sec. If a step change of 22C to 50C is applied at t = 0, find the output voltage at 0.5 sec, 2.0 sec., 3.3 sec. and 9 sec. 7. A pressure sensor measures 44 psi just before a sudden change to 70 psi. The sensor measure 52 psi at a time 4.5 sec. after the change. What is the sensor time constant?
