ABSTRACT

The purpose of this report is to provide the details of the institution of attachment, a description
of all the activities undertaken during the same, the lessons learnt and the challenges during the
attachment period.

The essence of attachment is to put all the theoretical work done in class by student into practical
exercise.

I was therefore attached at Kisumu Water And Sanitation Company limited for a period of 3
months where I carried on major activities.

CHAPTER 1.

DECLARATION

the Kisumu Water And Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) and has never been presented to any
institution by any individual.

I also declare that, as required by these rules and conduct, I have fully written this report based
on truth and cited and all the activities that I undertook while on attachment. I therefore declare
this material original.

DEDICATION

I dedicate this report to my parent who has been giving me financial support during the period of
my attachment. It has not been easy since I had to travel to and fro to my attachment area.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) is the largest companies which supply
water to consumers in Kisumu County.

Its main aim office is located within Kisumu Town.

KIWASCO has seven sub-station of reservoir and every reservoir has pump operator. County
government of Kisumu is the so limn shareholder of KIWASCO.

CHAPTER 2

BACK GROUND OF THE KIWASCO

Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) was found in 2001 and registered under
Cap46 of the law of Kenya as a subsidiary company of the Municipal Council of Kisumu.

It started to operation on 1stJuly2003. KIWASCO was established through there form that has
taken place in the water sector nationally and based on the decision to privatizes essential
services. It was established through transformation of what used to be the water and sewerage
department of the Municipal Council of Kisumu. Its core objective is to make the water and
sanitation services provision commercial activity driven by motive to generate fund to
sustainably run itself. Kisumu County has a population of approximately 865,000persons.

About 418, 152 of the County population lie within KIWASCO’s coverage area.

Kisumu. The mandates of Kisumu water and Sanitation Company together with county
government of Kisumu is effectively and efficiently make water and sanitation services provision
commercial activities drive by motives to generate enough fund to sustainably run itself.

Installation of Meter

Tools used

 Pipe wrench
 Spanners of different sizes

It’s installed between lying pipes and standing pipes to ease the readings. It has an arrow which
shows the direction of water when it is being installed. It’s raised at a distance of one foot from
the ground.

Control of Leakage

When controlling the leakage of water from the ground, the pipe is exposed by use of spade and
jembe/mattock to create working space. After exposing and find out the type of pipe busted,
when it is PVC, PPR and HDPP pipe, PVC pipe is used for socket. The first thing to be done
when controlling the leakage, we close the gate valve to stop the flow of water, thereafter, the
busted part of pipe is cut where by the good measurement is taken for the socket with the
required of overlap P.V.C pipe of the same size is heated by fire to become soft where it is being
enlarged by the same pipe which is cut from the ground. The suffix gum is smeared inside the
socket to create the fixing, after controlling the leakage gate valve is open for testing the back
filing is done.

Joining of pipes

The following joints are used; elbows, sockets, nipples, union flanges, UJ coupling tee Ranger
and also use of but fusion machine. We use elbow when changing the direction, but tee for the
distribution of water UJ Coupling, Ranger Coupling are used for the pipes of larger sizes form 4
inches together with the flange joint union, sockets are used to join rigid pipes. But fusion is a
machine used to join HDPP pipes of large sizes. It has a trimming machine and molding
machine. Trimming machine used for trimming/shaping pipes where by molding machine is used
for joining pipes likely.

Installation of cistern

The cistern is raised with the recommended height to allow the required pressure. It may be
raised at the top of the ceiling board or outside the house. The following materials should be used
during installation of i.e. ball valve, delivery pipe, gate valve and valve.

Ball valve prevents the flow of water from the inlet after water has reached its recommended
level. Delivery pipe acts as a breather which controls the busting tank. Gate valve is used to
control the flow of water from the tank to the tap/it used to allow the flow of water from the tank
cistern

Lying of pipe for connection of water

When connecting pipes of water from the main to the customers. First, we expose pipe to create
the space for the consumers, where by when the space is too small we use saddle clump which
depends on the size of the pipe but when the space is too big we use tee. When the main pipe is 4
inches and the service pipe is 1inch, saddle clump should be 4 by inch saddle clump, the main
pipe of the same size with the service pipe.

Financial Problem

Financial problem is one of the challenges I faced where by the distance from where I lived to
where I was placed was far so I couldn’t manage to travel daily. The only option was to prepare
early and trek to reach in time.

Unfavorable Environment

Being that we were working in the field I was affected by weather where by it changed daily.
Sometimes it used to rain and sunny days which absolutely affected me negatively.

General Comments

Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) is one of the companies in Kenya which
supplies water to the consumers and concerns their health through treatment of water.

Through the skills and knowledge and gained during my attachment in KIWASCO, I can do
more in plumbing work and my vision is to be the best plumber.

Through our cooperation and coordination together with the staff of KIWASCO, the creativity
which we performed most moved smoothly and made us to have easy time.

I acknowledge the teachers from NYSTC for their good work and knowledge they provide with
and make sure that I complete my attachment.

I am very happy and I would like to take this another golden opportunity to thank my teachers
together with my trainers of KIWASCO who have their best to make sure I complete my
attachment. I also congratulate my fellow attaches who cooperated and teamed throughout the
attachment period. May God bless them all.
