ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS.
Figures at the right hand margin indicate marks.
All symbols carry usual meanings. Data, if not provided any, may be suitably assumed with justification.
Q1
a) The carrier to noise ratio (C/N) at the input to the demodulator of an FDM/FM receiver is 25 dB.
Calculate the signal to noise ratio (S/N) for the top channel in a 300 channel FDM baseband signal. The 3
emphasis improvement is 4 dB, noise weighting improvement is 2.5 dB, and the peak/rms factor is 3.16.
The audio channel bandwidth may be taken as 3.1 kHz.

b) A satellite is moving in a highly eccentric and highly inclined orbit. The closest and farthest points in
5
the orbit from the surface of the earth are 500 km and 35000 km, respectively. Assuming Earth’s radius as
6371 km, determine
(i) the time taken by the satellite to complete one revolution round the earth.
(ii) the velocities at apogee point, perigee point and at a point P on the orbit perpendicular to the center
of the earth.
(iii) the eccentricity of the orbit.

c) Derive the expression for the eccentricity of the elliptical orbit of the satellite in terms of semi minor
axis and semi major axis and explain the role of the eccentricity of the orbit. 2

Q2 a) Consider a 60 channel FDM-FM telephony system with a baseband expanding from 12 to 252 kHz and
a specified noise per channel of 10,000 pW. Assume a 200 kHz test-tone rms frequency deviation and a 4
5.5dB weighting improvement to find
(i) the carrier-to-noise ratio.
(ii) the FDM-FM bandwidth.

b) Six speech signals sampled at 8 kHz and coded with 8 bits, two audio signals sampled at 32 kHz and
coded with 12 bits are multiplexed, adding a sync word of 16 bits in each frame. Find the frame period, 4
bits in each frame, and the multiplexed data rate.

c) Which method is used to raise or lower the heights of apogee and perigee during launching of satellite 2
into space orbits? Show the pictorial representation of the same.

Q3
a) What do you understand by TT&C subsystem of the Satellite Communication System? Justify the
essentiality of the unit as far as the payload is concerned. 3

b) Two satellites A and B with weights of 80Kg and 560Kg respectively are placed in the same circular 2
orbit. Which will move faster and why?

c) Prove that [S/N]dB = [C/N]dB + [Improvement]dB for an SCPC analog telephone channel over satellite.
State the improvement factor(s). 3
d) Calculate the IF bandwidth required for a 300 channel, and a 960 channel FDM/FM telephony signal 2
assuming the peak/rms factor is equal to 3.16 and 6.5 respectively.
