CHARACTERISTICS

OF QUANTITATIVE
RESEARCH
PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1
LIZA RICAH U. AVILA
LESSON REVIEW

• What did you learn from last meeting’s lesson?

OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, the students
are expected to:
1. identify the characteristics of a
quantitative research CS_RS12-Ia-c-1
WHAT MAKES
YOU “YOU”?
ACTIVITY

Group yourselves into 6 groups. Your task is

to give your own definition to a word given
to you. Do not consult any dictionary. Write
at least 10 words to define the given word.
ANALYSIS
• How accurate are the definitions you gave
to the words?
• How are these words related to research?
• How does each characteristic apply to
research?
• Are all these characteristics applicable to
both qualitative and quantitative research?
RESEARCH
A systematic and refined technique of
thinking, employing specialized tools,
instruments, and procedures in order to
obtain a more adequate solution to a
problem
EMPIRICAL ANALYTICAL
LOGICAL REPLICABLE
CYCLICAL CRITICAL

CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH
EMPIRICAL
adjective
- based on, concerned with, or verifiable
by observation or experience rather than
theory or pure logic
• Research is based on direct experience or
observation by the researcher.
EMPIRICAL

• Learning by doing
• Familiarizing the research process can
only be done if there is an actual
conduct of research.
LOGICAL

adjective
- of or according to the rules of logic or
formal argument
• Research is based on logical reasoning
and involves both inductive and
deductive methods of data analysis.
LOGICAL

• Based on valid procedures and

principles
• Scientific investigation is done in an
orderly manner
LOGICAL

• Researcher can generalize idea from

specific investigations of a phenomenon
• Can also break down idea into smaller
parts for reader to understand
CYCLICAL

adjective
- occurring in cycles; recurrent.
• Research undergoes a cyclical
process. It starts with a problem and
ends with a problem
CYCLICAL

• Starts with the Why, What and How

of a phenomenon
• Goes through the entire process and
ends with a recommendation; hence,
a potential problem that needs to be
investigated by other researchers.
ANALYTICAL

adjective
- relating to or using analysis or
logical reasoning.
• Research utilizes proven analytical
procedures
ANALYTICAL

• Use facts or evidences already

available, and to analyze these to
make a critical evaluation
• Establish why it is that way or how it
came to be
ANALYTICAL

• Find solutions to common problems

and make decisions about what
actions to take next.
REPLICABLE

adjective
- able to be copied or reproduced exactly.
• The research design and procedures are
replicated to enable the researcher to
arrive at valid and conclusive results.
REPLICABLE

• The more replicated, the more valid

and conclusive the results
• Research can be replicated any time
in a different setting, but its findings
are never duplicated.
REPLICABLE

• The more replicated, the more valid

and conclusive the results
• Research can be replicated any time
in a different setting, but its findings
are never duplicated.
CRITICAL

adjective
- expressing or involving an analysis
of the merits and faults of a work
• Research exhibits a careful and
precise judgment.
CRITICAL
• Researcher must be critical in
treating his/her hypothesis
• A high level of confidence (certain
that research finding is valid and
reliable) of at least 95% must be
established.
CRITICAL
• Research must be free from
statistical, grammatical and
conceptual errors
• Consultants are needed to check the
veracity (accuracy) of research
outputs
CHARACTERISTICS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

1. The data are gathered using

structured research instruments.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
2. The results are based on larger
sample sizes that are randomly
chosen as representatives of the
population.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

3. The research can usually be

replicated or repeated, given its
high reliability.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

4. The researcher has a clearly

defined research question to which
objective answers are sought.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

5. All aspects of the study are

carefully designed before data are
collected.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

6. Data are in the form of

numbers and statistics.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
7. Data are presented through tables,
graphs, figures or other non-textual
forms and followed by textual
analysis and interpretation.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
8. Project can be used to generalize
concepts more widely, predict future
results, or investigate causal
relationships.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

9. The researcher uses tools, such as

questionnaires or computer software,
to collect numerical data.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

10. Findings are reusable.
