Forming and Solving Equations – Homework

An equation is a set of algebraic terms combined using +, –, × or ÷ with an equals sign, which has
a limited number of solutions, such as 2y + 8 = 11.

For example,
Ben is x years old. His sister, Carla, is 2 years older than him.
The sum of their ages is 12. Use an algebraic method to work out the ages of both children.

Ben is x years old so his sister’s age is x + 2.

The sum of their ages is
x + x + 2 = 2x + 2
We are told this is equal to 12:
2x + 2 = 12

To solve, first subtract 2 from both sides to get 2x = 10.

Now, divide by 2 to get x = 5.
Ben is 5 and his sister is 7.
