Activity No. 1
1. Choose at least five characteristics of a 21st century teacher. Write specific
examples of each teacher’s characteristics.
- (1) Adaptability: In the fast-paced world of 21st-century education, educators
need to be able to adjust to new technology and approaches. For instance, during
unplanned school closures, they could easily switch from traditional classroom lectures
to online classes using video conferencing capabilities.
(2) Digital literacy: Teachers must be adept at using a variety of technical tools for
both teaching and learning in the modern digital world. A teacher who uses digital
collaboration tools, online simulations, and interactive educational apps in their courses
to improve student understanding and engagement is an example of this.
(3) Facilitating critical thinking: Rather than merely teaching knowledge,
contemporary teachers foster critical thinking abilities by offering challenging questions,
promoting discussion, and helping students examine, assess, and analyze data from a
variety of sources. A teacher might, for example, assign a project that requires students
to investigate and present several viewpoints on a contemporary social issue in order to
foster critical thinking about difficult subjects.
(4) Cultural competency: Teachers must be sensitive to the backgrounds and
experiences of their pupils and possess cultural competence in light of the increasingly
varied classrooms. A teacher who celebrates a variety of festivals, uses multicultural
literature, and creates an inclusive learning atmosphere where all children feel
appreciated and respected is an example.
(5) Lifelong learning: Teachers in the twenty-first century understand the value of
ongoing professional development and setting an example of a growth mindset for their
pupils. They pursue further degrees, attend workshops, and remain current with the most
recent findings and recommended techniques in education. To enhance their instructional
skills, educators should sign up for peer mentorship programs or take online courses to
acquire new teaching techniques.
2. Give at least five (5) importances of the different 21st century characteristics of
a teacher.
- A 21st-century teacher must possess five key characteristics: adaptability,
collaboration skills, digital literacy, cultural competence, and critical thinking facilitation.
Adaptability is crucial in meeting diverse learning needs in the rapidly evolving
educational landscape. Collaboration skills enable effective teamwork and sharing best
practices. Digital literacy allows teachers to integrate technology into lessons, enhancing
student engagement. Cultural competence promotes inclusivity and respect for diverse
backgrounds. Critical thinking facilitation helps students navigate complex problems and
make informed decisions. These characteristics are essential for educators to prepare
students for success in a global society.
3. These are the Nine Lessons on How to Teach 21st Century Skills and Knowledge.
Give your views about it.
a. Make it relevant.
- For pupils to be engaged and to have a deep understanding, relevance is
essential. Linking educational materials to real-world situations enables students to
realize how the knowledge they are gaining may be applied in the actual world, increasing
its relevance and inspiring them.
b. Teach through the discipline.
- This highlights how crucial it is to teach material in-depth while incorporating
cross-disciplinary links. Students who concentrate on a discipline's fundamental ideas
and concepts build a solid foundation that they may use in a variety of situations.
c. Develop lower and higher-order thinking skills at the same time.
- Comprehensive learning requires striking a balance in the development of lower-
order (e.g., remembering, understanding) and higher-order (e.g., analyzing, evaluating,
producing) cognitive skills. This method promotes creativity, critical thinking, and problem-
solving.
d. Encourage transfer of learning.
- Deep understanding and lifetime learning depend on assisting students in
applying their knowledge and abilities in a variety of settings. Instructors must to create
tasks and evaluations that encourage learners to apply what they have learned to novel
situations.
e. Teach students to learn (meta-cognition).
- Giving kids the tools to comprehend their own learning procedures and
approaches encourages independence and self-control. Teaching metacognitive abilities
gives kids the tools they need to succeed academically and personally. These skills
include goal-setting, planning, monitoring, and reflecting.
f. Address misunderstanding directly.
- Correcting students' errors and fostering conceptual clarity need focused
intervention and effective feedback. Building a culture in the classroom where students
are at ease admitting their mistakes and working through them creates a helpful learning
environment.
g. Promote teamwork as a process and outcome.
- Not only may collaborative learning experiences improve social skills, but they
also foster important abilities like problem-solving, cooperation, and communication.
Students are better prepared for success in a variety of settings when the collaborative
process—which includes good communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution—is
emphasized.
h. Exploit technology to support learning.
- Carefully integrating technology can improve learning opportunities by giving
students access to a wealth of materials, encouraging teamwork and communication, and
encouraging interactive, individualized instruction. Effective technology use necessitates
giving educational objectives and student needs some thought.
i. Foster students’ creativity.
- Being creative is essential for generating innovation and handling difficult
situations. Offering chances for investigation, experimentation, and expression across
disciplines is a key component in fostering creativity. By encouraging students' curiosity,
varied thinking, and risk-taking, teachers can help them become more creative.
