THE WICS MODEL

-In the WICS Model, intelligence is viewed as a set of fluid abilities learn from experience and to adapt to one's
surrounding.
-Individuals possess abilities that can be nurtured into competencies and further cultivate into expertise.
*Individuals possess abilities that can be nurtured into competencies and further cultivate into expertise. Like for
example, if the students know how to sing, it will eventually turn to be one of their competencies where it can lead
them to join a singing contest. And if they will continue to work for it or enhance their ability, it will then turn to be one
of their expertise.

WICS stands for Wisdom, Intelligence, Creativity, and Synthesized

STERBERG DESCRIBED THE WICS MODEL AS FOLLOWS:
"The basic idea is that citizens of the world need creativity to form a Vision of where they want to go and to cope with
changes in the environment, Analytical intelligence to ascertain whether their creative ideas are good ones,
Practical intelligence to implement their ideas and to persuade others of the ethical values of their ideas, and
Wisdom in order to ensure that the ideas will help achieve some ethically-based common good, over the long and
short terms rather than just what is good for them and their families and friends."
*Sternberg propose this to help us get beyond self-fulfilling progresses in admission, instruction and assessment. So,
unlike in traditional method of teaching where teachers use tests and examinations to see students stock knowledge.
In this WICS Model, we’ll see how students learn more than just going through examinations.

APPLYING THE WICS MODEL

- The uses of the WICS model include admission, instruction and assessment.
* in teaching, teachers are not just giving out examinations or test but here in this theory, students will go through
these 3 ways. First admission, 2nd instruction, 3rd assessment.

So how do we apply WICS Model in the classroom?

Teaching Analytically
To ascertain whether their creative ideas are good ones.
 So here are the ways on how we teach analytically

HOW TO TEACH ANALYTICALLY

1. Analyze- examine methodically and in detail the constitution or structure of something especially information.
*Like for instance, we let the students read the book NOLI ME TANGERE. Basically, in traditional teaching, we like to
see how much students learn we usually go through examination or test. But here in WICS Model, we let our students
analyze, and ask them how they interpret the story based on their own understanding and how the teaching apply in
real life.
2. Critique- a careful judgement in which someone gives an opinion about something.
*For instance, we instruct our students to examine a painting, so aside from asking them how they feel towards the
painting, we let them critique the paint for them to evaluate how the painting goes well or to know their opinion about
the painting together with their opinions, we’ll know which of their perspective somehow reflects how they view things.
3. Compare and contrast- looking for similarities and differenced between two things
*like for example, comparing 2 theories of Sternberg which are the successful intelligence theory and the WICS
Model, students will know how this 2 theories differ to each other and see their similarities as well.
4. Evaluate- to determine the significance, worth, or condition of usually by careful appraisal and study.
* for instance, we are teaching the theory of evolution, in order for the students to understand and see the importance
of this theory, we require them to evaluate the validity of the theory of evolution through making a term paper.
5 . Assess- evaluate or estimate the nature, ability, or quality of.
 Example, we introduce a topic to our students about how to manage a traffic, so to let our students’ asses,
we let them think a way or a strategies that could help resolve the problem of the traffic. We let them solve
the problem by assessing an effective solution to the problem.
HOW TO TEACH CREATIVELY

Discover the fundamental physical principles that underlies all of the following problems.
So how do we teach creatively?
1. Create- bring (something) into existence.
 Like for example to see or to develop the creativeness of our students, so we implement activities which are
related to artistics. Like for example we want our students to create a sling bag using recyclable trash, in that
way we will see how students make a sling bag using recyclable trash creatively.

2. Invent- create or design (something that has not existed before); be the originator of.
3. Discover- find (something or someone) unexpectedly or in the course of a search.
 So like for example by letting the students create a project proposal, students must make a proposal that
based on the problems that occur in the campus, they’ll going to discover ways on how they will resolve the
problem then formulate it in to a project proposal. This is a test on how they will resolve a problem in a
creative way.

4. Imagine if...- form a mental image or concept of.

* making a scenario and let the students imagine what ifs like for example, “WHAT IF EDSA REVOLUTION DIDN’T
HAPPEN IN 1986? WHAT DO YOU THINK OUR COUNTRY WILL BE LIKE AT THE PRESENT AND 10 YEARS
LATER?” so in this way, students can picture out things and formulate scenarios that can answer the question.
5. Supposed that...-

Teaching practically- practical education is a way more interactive than theoretical

HOW TO TEACH PRACTICALLY
1. Apply- to put to use especially for some practical purpose.
* for example, we let our students read a story that contains a moral lesson, in that case, we will assess them on how
they will apply that lesson in their lives.
2. Put into practice
* putting into practice what you have learned about the classroom rules by making your own classroom rules poster.
3. Implement- it is the carrying out, execution, or practice of a plan.
* so as a teacher, we implement a lesson applying the principles of teaching that one has made

Teaching wisdom- Aims to reclaim the narrative and author the culture of teaching as a teacher see it.

HOW DO WE TEACH WISDOM

Try to find a common good

See things from other’s point of view
Balance your own interest with those of others and of institutions.
Look at the long term as well as the short term.
Reflect how one can base his every decision on positive ethical values.
Appreciate that in life, what is seen as true and effective may vary over time and place.

“YOUR ROLE AS A TEACHER IS NOT TO EDUCATE THE MIND ALONE, BUT TO EDUCATE THE SOUL AS
WELL.”
