One of the most successful and popular competitive and
recreational sports in the world. It is fast, exciting, and
the action is explosive. A sport played by two teams on a
playing court divided by a net.
The objective of the game is to send the ball over the net
in order to ground it on the opponent’s court, and to
prevent the same effort by the opponent.
The ball is put in play with service hit by the server over
the net to the opponents. The rally continues until the
ball is grounded on the playing court, goes “out” or a
team fails to return it properly.
William G. Morgan invented the game. FIVB
(International Federation of Volleyball) – Highest
governing body of the sport founded in Paris, France in
1947. Its headquarters is located in Lausanne,
Switzerland and its current president is Ary Graca.
HISTORY
William G. Morgan
- A physical education director in the YMCA in
Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA.
The game was first develop in 1895 by William G.
Morgan who had completed his degree in physical
education in 1894 at Springfield college.
While working as physical education instructor at YMCA
in Holyoke, Massachusetts, he attempted to get the local
business men involved in the game of basketball. He
succeeded in getting some men to play for recreation
purposes, but some older men didn’t.
He also considered having them play tennis, but rejected
the idea because of the equipment required and it is also
too costly. Until he decided to blend the elements of
basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a
game for his classes that would demand less physical
contact than basketball.
Morgan called his game “mintonette” which became the
first name of volleyball.
July 7, 1896, Morgan was invited to exhibit his game
mintonette at Springfield college.
J. Curran and John Lynch, the mayor and fire chief of
Holyoke are among the participants of the exhibition.
During the exhibition, Morgan gave the presider a copy
of the rules of the game written in long hand.
Alfred Halstead, a faculty of Springfield College is one of
the spectators during the exhibition game. As observer,
he noticed that players are volleying the ball back and
forth above the net. That day he named it “Volleyball”.
 In 1896, W.E. Day introduced the new sports at
Dayton, Ohio. He developed some new rules:
- The net raised to seven- and one-half feet
- Eliminating the possibility of dribbling the ball
(multiple hits by one player)
- Standardized score to 21 points
 In 1912, the modern version of the rules was started.
- The court and ball were standardized.
- The players are required to rotate before a
serve.
 In 1916, the YMCA and NCAA published the rules of
the game and made additional change.
- Height of the net at 8 ft.
- Set the game score at 15.
- A two out of three games set games.
 Early 1920’s, A. Provost Idell and his teammates
added a few more rules.
- Standardized court at 30x60 feet.
- Limiting the number of hits per side to three.

POPULARITY OF VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball become popular around the world. The game
was introduced to the different countries;
- 1910 in Philippines
- 1913 in Japan
- 1915 in Poland
- 1916 in Uruguay
- 1919 in Brazil and Latvia
- 1922 In Syria
After the world war 1, the game was introduced
throughout Europe.
In early 1920’s, the University of Illinois began to teach
volleyball as a physical education activity. The University
began an intramural program featuring volleyball
competition.
In 1928, Oregon started a first college team. The
University of Washington followed with a team in 1934.
These team played in recreational leagues.
In 1941, the first University Volleyball league began with
12 teams, among them are the teams from Columbia,
Temple, and the University of Pennsylvania.
Many college fielded club teams in the late 1940’s and
by 1952 the NCAA was willing to sponsor the national
championships of 8 schools who were ready to field
varsity teams. But during that time only 6 were ready
with varsity teams.
The United States Volleyball Association (UVSBA) was
formed in 1928. By 1937, it controlled the game in United
States.
International Volleyball Federation (IVF) was formed in
1947 to regulate the game throughout the world.
- The First World Championship was held in 1953.
- In 1955, volleyball was played in the 1st Pan
American Games.
- In 1964, volleyball became an Olympic Sport.
- A recent poll showed that 800 million people in
the world play volleyball at least once a week.
- Out of 50 sports listed in the survey, volleyball
was in the twelfth most popular sports.
- It showed also that in the last 25 years, the sport
had increased its popularity by 500% and that is
growing even more rapidly today.
VOLLEYBALL IN THE PHILIPPINES
- In 1910, volleyball was introduced in the
Philippines.
- Elwood S. Brown, director of physical education
of the YMCA introduced the game to the
Philippines.
- An association pivotal in creating physical
education and the first English-based law school
in the country, now known as the UP College of
Law. He also assisted in establishing the now
Philippine Olympic Committee and the first Boy
Scout of the Philippines troop.
- Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) first
organization was organized.
- July 4, 1961, Philippine Amateur Volleyball
Association (PAVA) was formed, organized by
Playground and Recreation Bureau (PRB)
- PAVA was renamed into Philippine Volleyball
Federation (PVF) in 2003.
- PVF was recognized and accredited by different
sporting bodies like the Philippine Olympic
Committee, Asian Volleyball Confederation and
the Federation International de Volleyball until
2015.
 - Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas (LVPI) is currently
the sole national governing body of volleyball in
the Philippines recognized as an affiliate and an
accredited association by the Philippine Olympic
Committee (POC), the Asian Volleyball
Confederation (AVC) and the Federation
Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB).
CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE PHILIPPINES TO
VOLLEYBALL
- Three hit limit
- Set and Spike also known as the “Filipino Bomb”
- So, when Volleyball began in the country, it
started as a passing game between two teams
separated by a net, usually played five on five.
Each member would take turns passing the ball
by bumping it with their hands before “volleying”
it to the team on the other side of the court.
- Sounds like a snooze fest? In 1920, our fellow
Filipinos thought so too! Since it would take too
much time before the ball crosses to the other
team’s court, they thought of creating the three-
hit limit, which the Americans then adopted –
considered the modern-day Volleyball’s most
fundamental rule.
- It doesn’t stop there; not long after
conceptualizing the three-hit limit, they thought
of making it more competitive by integrating
what they called the “Filipino Bomb” or “Bomba.”
This Set & Spike offensive way of playing
volleyball turned out to be one of the biggest
milestones the country has contributed to the
sport.
Volleyball is a sport played by two teams on a playing
court divided by a net. There are different versions
available for specific circumstances in order to offer the
versatility of the game to everyone. The object of the
game is to send the ball over the net in order to ground it
on the opponent's court, and to prevent the same effort
by the opponent. The team has three hits for returning
the ball (in addition to the block contact). The ball is put
in play with a service, hit by the server over the net to the
opponents. The rally continues until the ball is grounded
on the playing court, goes "out" or a team fails to return it
properly. In Volleyball, the team winning a rally scores a
point (Rally Point System). When the receiving team
wins a rally, it gains a point and the right to serve, and its
players rotate one position clockwise.
Volleyball has developed into a very specialized sport.
Most teams will include in their starting line-up a setter,
two center blockers, two receiver-hitters and a universal
spiker. Only certain players will be involved with service
reception. Players will also have specialist positions for
attack and defense. Substitutions are allowed during the
game.
Since 1998, volleyball bas been using a new scoring
system. Teams scored a point on every rally (Rally Point
System), regardless of which team served. Formerly, a
team could only win a point if it served the ball. Winning
the serve back from the opposition was known as a side-
out.
Matches are played best of five sets. The first four sets
are played to 25 points, with the final set being played to
15 points. A team must win a set by two points. There is
no ceiling, so a set continues until one of the teams
gains a two-point advantage. Previously, all sets were to
15 points, with the first four sets having a ceiling of 17
and the final set requiring at least a two-point winning
advantage.
In 1998, the FIVB introduced a new specialist role: the
libero. This player wears a different colored uniform from
the rest of the team and can be substituted in backcourt
for any player on the team. The libero cannot serve,
spike the ball over the net or rotate into the front-line
positions, but plays a vital role for the team in serve
reception and backcourt defense. There must be at least
one point played between a libero substituting off for a
player and going back on the court for another player –
hence he/she cannot be on the court for the whole
game. The libero has added an extra dimension to
backcourt defense, improving the reception of teams,
lengthening the rallies and giving a vital role to shorter
players.

Volleyball is a complex game of simple skills. The ball is

spiked from up to 60 cm above the height of a basketball
hoop (about 3.65 metres) and takes fractions of a
second to travel from the spiker to the receiver. That
means the receiver must assess incoming angle, decide
where to pass the ball and then control their pass in the
blink of an eye. A purely rebound sport (you can't hold
the ball), volleyball is a game of constant motion.
A team can touch the ball three times on its side of the
net. The usual pattern is a dig (an underarm pass made
with the forearms), a set (an overhead pass made with
the hands) and a spike (the overhead attacking shot).
The ball is served into play. Teams can also try to block
the opponent's spike as it crosses the net. A block into
your own court counts as one of your three touches in
beach volleyball, but not in volleyball.

Power and height have become vital components of

international teams, but the ability of teams and coaches
to devise new strategies, tactics and skills has been
crucial for continued success.

There are six players on court in a volleyball team, who

each must rotate one position clockwise every time their
team wins back service from the opposition. Only the
three players at the net positions can jump and spike or
block near the net. The backcourt players can only hit
the ball over the net if they jump from behind the attack
line, also known as the three-metre line, which separates
the front and back part of the court.
