Problem Based Learning (PBL) – Year 2023

Problem Statement:
The I-shaped girder of 4 m length in a multi-storey building is subjected to 125 kN/m uniformly
distributed load (UDL) along its centreline (Figure 1 a, b). Further, the state of Plane Strain on
an element is ∈𝒙 = 450 (10-6), ∈𝒚 = 200 (10-6) and 𝜸𝒙𝒚 = 200 (10-6) (Figure 1c). Compute the
following,
i. Stresses at Points A, B and C, where Point A is at one quarter of the depth of I-
section, Point B is at mid height of I-section and Point C is at three quarters of the
depth of I-section.
ii. Principal stresses in the I-section.
iii. Equivalent state of strain on an element at the same point oriented 30° CCW and 60°
CCW using the Strain Transformation Equations and Mohr Circle.
