INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE MATHEMATICS INVESTIGATION 2024

1. The task will be sent to schools on 26 February 2024, and will be WRITTEN by learners on
27 February 2024.
All schools in the Province who choose to write this task must comply with this date.

2. The duration of the task is 1 hour 30 minutes, and the total mark is 60.

3. The aim of the Investigation is to DISCOVER THE COMPOUND AND DOUBLE ANGLE
IDENTITIES, AND TO USE THESE IDENTITIES TO SIMPLIFY TRIGONOMETRIC
EXPRESSIONS AND TO PROVE OTHER TRIGONOMETRIC IDENTITIES.

4. Spaces will be provided for learners to write their answers on the question paper itself (i.e. a
fill-in paper).

5. The question paper SHOULD NOT BE REDUCED IN SIZE when being duplicated for
learners. The question paper consists of 7 pages.

6. LEARNERS MAY NOT USE THEIR TEXT BOOKS, EXERCISE BOOKS, NOTES,
ETC. WHEN DOING THE TASK. The task has to be administered under examination
conditions.

7. Learners’ knowledge on Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry and Euclidean Geometry from

previous grades is needed in doing the task. In addition, short notes will be released on 23
February to further assist them to prepare for the task.

8. Each learner will need his/her own calculator, pen, pencil and eraser when doing the task.
