Background/Observation - Obesity is a well known risk factor for atherosclerosis, and accelerates
atherosclerosis by many mechanisms such as increasing blood pressure and glucose level, abnormal lipid
profiles, and systemic inflammation.

Problem statement - in guyana there has been a rapid increase of heart attacks among obese
persons in Georgetown, Guyana.

Research objective - To determine if fried chicken and chips are the leading cause of
atherosclerosis in the community of East Ruimveldt Gardens.

2
Methodology
The researcher decided to use a questionnaire to obtain the data, as it is proven to be very effective in this
type of research. The respondents' ages ranged from 25 - 60. The researcher will be distributing a total of
twenty (20) questionnaires the course of the interview took place over a course of 1 week. The researcher
may have limitations carrying out the research cause the respondents may not tell the truth.
It will have two advantages of doing the questionnaire, they can generate a much higher response rate than
web questionnaires and it's easy to distribute the questionnaire. The disadvantage of using the questionnaire
is that it requires higher labor and financial investments.

The following questions were asked:

Analysis and Interpretation of Data
Analysis of Data
Analysis of data will be from a calculation of twenty questionnaires in total on heart disease. Most causes
of heart disease come from fast foods since it is one of the causes of clogged arteries and high blood
pressure. The analysis will be based on questions eight (8), ten (10) and eleven (11).

Interpretation of Data
In Figure one (1) , the researcher has found out most people will likely get heart disease from eating fast food
while some people say unhealthy food practice is also a major concern for heart disease, because the amount of
cholesterol they intake will cause the blood vessels to be plagued by plaque.

In Figure two (2), the graph is speaking about the effects or symptoms of atherosclerosis which they were
given four options to choose from such as numbness in legs, high blood pressure, chest pain and difficulty
speaking. The researcher examined the questionnaire and found out 40% of persons chose high blood
pressure, while 35% chose chest pain, 20% of persons chose numbness in legs and the last 5% difficulty
speaking.

In Figure three (3), the graph speaks about what are some rules the government should implement to reduce
the risk of heart disease. In this question the person didn't have any options, so they could give their own
answer or opinion. This graph is based on the answers the researcher summarized and found out 25% is
speaking about the reduction of alcohol consumption, 35% is about the reduction of smoking and 40% is
about having regular check ups to the doctor.

8
Conclusion
In the researcher investigation on atherosclerosis or heart disease, this can be caused by many factors such
as fast food, unhealthy food practice and being lazy. There are effects or symptoms of this disease that may
be high blood pressure, chest pain, etc. In Guyana there would be an increase of heart attacks among the
obese persons and persons with unhealthy diets. The researcher found information that helped to address
the problem and the objectives were met. The findings on atherosclerosis is about the symptoms or effects,
while it is a known risk factor of obesity, it slowly develops into plaque which builds up and causes the
arteries to narrow.

9
Recommendation
Many people can be educated on the effects of this disease and what it does by visiting the local health
center or hospital. There are some ways that this disease can be prevented is to keep the arteries healthy via
● Quitting smoking
● Eating healthy
● Exercising healthy
● Checking and maintaining a healthy
● Checking and maintaining healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels

10
Reflection
The researcher learnt while doing the investigation that there are more risk factors of this disease such as a
family history of early heart disease, sleep apnea and high levels of C-reactive protein (CRP). When to see a
doctor, talk to a healthcare provider. You have to pay attention to the early symptoms like chest pain or leg
pain. Early diagnosis and treatment can stop atherosclerosis from worsening and prevent a heart attack or
stroke. The lessons learnt is to keep the human body healthy, have regular checkups and keep blood pressure
healthy.
