Course Title HCIN 557 – Financial Management in Health Care Systems

Course Project Implementation of Barcode Technology for Blood Product Administration

Competency Leadership and Systems Management

The course, Financial Management in Health Care Systems, culminated in a major project that I

was able to focus on barcode technology. This technology would be about blood product administration.

As part of this project, I was able to develop an implementation plan on what the financial cost of that

implementation would be. This financial assessment also projected cost savings to the organization

related to gains in safety, nurse retention, and productivity. To complete the project, I performed a SWOT

analysis and a market analysis, as well as made a detailed Gantt chart.

The project allowed me to imagine a vision and develop a plan of action that demands leadership

on a variety of fronts. As part of the project, I explored how effective human systems management would

address concerns or resistance to change, train staff on new processes, and ensure that clinical workflows

are properly optimized. The hypothetical hospital used for the project was aligning the blood product

administration process into a larger effort to improve patient care, enhance safety protocols, and embrace

technological solutions. By allowing me to identify a process improvement project, understand the

context of how it aligns with quality and safety practices, and create an implementation plan, the project

facilitated my satisfaction of the Leadership and Systems Management Competency.
