EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Total South Pars 11 Limited (TOTAL) has contracted Noble Denton Geotechnical and Ocean
Services Limited (NDGOS), Dubai, UAE, to carry out a geotechnical site investigation for the
South Pars Phase 11 Field Development Project, in the Persian Gulf, offshore Iran.
This report presents the details of the offshore operations, the results of the offshore and
onshore laboratory testing and presents the geotechnical data for use in engineering design at
the SPD12 and SPD13 borehole locations, as requested by TOTAL under their contract TSP
11/PJ/006.
The geotechnical field investigation for the proposed South Pars complex, SPD12 and SPD13,
were performed between the 5th and 11th August and between 31st July and 5th August, 2005,
respectively. The field programme included the performance of drilling, soil sampling, coring and
in situ testing to maximum depths of 109.6 m and 111.0 m for the SPD12 and SPD13 locations,
respectively. The reduced water depths for the SPD12 and SPD13 sites are approximately 61.3
m and 71.5 m, respectively.
As anticipated, the soil conditions primarily consist of very silty carbonate clays, very soft near
the seabed and increasing in strength to become hard at depth. The boreholes reveal local
layers of cemented very weak to moderately weak siliceous calcarenite and variably cemented
clays and silts.
1 INTRODUCTION
Noble Denton Geotechnical & Ocean Services Ltd. (NDGOS) have been contracted by
Total South Pars 11 Limited (TOTAL) to perform a geotechnical site investigation in
connection with their South Pars Phase 11 Field Development Project, in the Persian
Gulf, offshore Iran.
• one sampling and one PCPT borehole at each of two offshore platform
locations (SPD12 and SPD13), with a target depth of 110m
• one sampling and one PCPT borehole at each of two condensate offloading
buoy locations (OB1 and OB2), with a target depth of 50m
• combined sampling, PCPT and rotary coring, as appropriate, at each of a flare
platform, a seawater intake facility and offloading jetty locations (E)
All drilling, sampling, coring and testing activities were carried out as per the
requirements of the Technical Specifications or, where appropriate, as otherwise
directed by the onboard Company (TOTAL) Representative.
A Vicinity Map, a General Borehole Location Plan, together with site specific location
plans for SPD12 and SPD13 sites, are presented in Figures 1 to 3, respectively.
The purpose of the investigation was to acquire detailed information on the soil
conditions and geotechnical properties to enable engineering analyses to be performed
for:
(a) foundation piles and conductor pipes for the SPD12 and SPD13 platforms;
(b) anchors for the condensate offloading buoys at the OB1 and OB2 locations;
(c) foundation piles for the flare platform, seawater intake facility and loading jetty.
A total of nineteen boreholes were drilled, sampled, cored and tested at seven
locations across the South Pars Phase 11 Field Development area:
The fieldwork was carried out between 31st July and 21st August 2005 from the OSV
“Relume” and is reported in detail in the NDGOS Field Report (NDGOS Document Ref.
WRE/8207/01/05/85/Rev01, dated 28th August 2005).
This report specifically presents the detailed data associated with the SPD12 and
SPD13 locations. In accordance with the TOTAL specification, the data presented
includes:
2 FIELDWORK ACTIVITIES
2.1 General
Fieldwork was carried out between 31st July 2005 and 21st August 2005. The specific
phase of the fieldwork at the SPD12 and SPD13 locations was performed between 31st
July and 11th August 2005.
A summary of the fieldwork activities follows. Full details of this phase of the works can
be found in the NDGOS Field Report, as referenced in the ‘related documents’ section
of this report.
The DP2 vessel OSV “Relume”, owned and operated by Middle Eastern Navigational
Aids Service (MENAS), was used to perform the fieldwork. The vessel has an overall
length of 82.6 m and a beam of 16.5 m.
The coordinates of the target and actual borehole locations are given in Table T1, and
the latter plotted on Figure 3.
Water depths were determined by direct measurement of the drillstring at seabed level
and at regular intervals during drilling operations by means of a dual-frequency echo-
sounder.
Water depths recorded at the location have been reduced to Lowest Astronomical Tide
(LAT) using the Simplified Method of Tidal Prediction (co-tidal atlas for the Persian
Gulf, NP214); these values are included in Table T1.
The boreholes were drilled using NDGOS’s fully heave-motion compensated offshore
drilling spread “Noble One”, which was installed on the vessel such that the rig was
cantilevered over the side on a purpose-built rig base.
Drilling was carried out using a standard 127 mm (5 inch) API drill pipe fitted with an
open-centre drag bit. Drilling mud, consisting of ‘Guar Gum’ mixed with seawater, was
used as required to provide a flushing medium and to stabilise the sides of the
borehole.
Hydraulic push samples were obtained in ‘Shelby’ tubes using the WISON system
incorporated in the drilling spread. In instances where push sampling was unsuccessful
due to the nature of the materials being sampled, percussion samples were obtained in
split-spoon samplers fitted to a wireline sliding hammer.
Where material was sufficiently cemented, coring was performed using a double-tube
wireline core barrel deployed within the main drillstring.
The Borehole Logs (Appendix A2) detail the sampling/testing methods employed within
each borehole and present the generalised stratigraphy, soils data and averaged
reduced water depth at the location.
All recovered samples were extracted from the sample tube/core barrel, inspected and
logged onboard in the purpose-built laboratory facility incorporated in the drilling
spread.
Onboard laboratory testing was carried out on selected portions of the recovered
samples/cores. Other sections were preserved and stored as appropriate for
subsequent testing onshore.
Full details of the sample handling procedures are contained within the Project Quality
Plan (PQP) reference in the ‘related documents’ section of this report.
Laboratory testing was performed in the purpose-built onboard laboratory facility and in
accordance with the relevant NDGOS procedures.
A summary of the results of the onboard tests are provided, along with those of the
subsequent onshore tests, in Appendix A4. Appendix A5 presents the detailed test
results, where appropriate.
3.1 General
The onshore laboratory test schedule was submitted to TOTAL for review and approval
following completion of the fieldwork.
Onshore testing in accordance with the approved laboratory test schedule was carried
out at Geolab Services PTE’s laboratory, Singapore.
The scope of onshore laboratory testing was selected in order to provide confirmation
of the onboard test results and to complement the onboard testing with additional tests
not normally carried out offshore.
The results of the tests are summarised in Appendix A4 with the actual test results
presented in Appendix A5, as appropriate.
Table T3 presents a listing of the laboratory tests performed during the present
geotechnical investigation, together with the relevant standards and/or procedures
followed in performing the tests.
3.3.1 General
The following classification and index tests are performed to characterise the materials
for engineering purposes.
In the field, immediately upon recovery, soil samples are extruded and classified
visually and by texture in accordance with BS 5930. The detailed soil descriptions are
recorded on individual soil sample description sheets, and include the following:
Water (or moisture) contents (w) are determined from measured total and dry weights
of specimens taken from soil samples recovered from the borehole. Measurements
are performed in accordance with the procedures described in BS 1377. Water content
measurements are performed on all samples to be used for advanced tests, and also
on other selected samples to provide sufficient data points to establish a natural water
content profile with depth in the borehole.
The liquid (wl) and plastic (wp) limits are determined for cohesive samples to assist soil
classification using the test procedures described in BS 1377.
The measurements of total (γt) and dry (γd) unit weight of the recovered soil samples
are determined in accordance with BS 1377. The unit weight values are reported in
units of Mg/m3.
The submerged unit weight (γ’) of each soil layer has been derived from the measured
bulk densities using the following relationship:
γ‘ = (ρb – ρw) . g
where:
Specific gravity (Gs) measurements of the soil particles are performed according to the
procedure detailed in BS 1377.
Sieve analyses are performed on selected samples to determine their grain size
distribution. Results for grain size distribution analyses are presented on a semi-
logarithmic plot with grain size (log) versus percentage passing by weight finer than the
grain size. Sieve analyses are performed in accordance with the procedures described
in BS 1377.
The proportion of fines (silt and clay) in a specimen is determined by washing the
material through the 63 μm sieve, and computing the percentage passing.
The hydrometer test is used to determine the grain size distribution of fine-grained
materials by a sedimentation method. The test procedures adopted are described in
detail in BS 1377.
The maximum and minimum density values that a material can achieve, without
particle crushing, are determined using the procedure described in BS 1377.
3.4.1 General
Soil shear strength is investigated in the laboratory using a variety of methods. For
cohesive materials, peak and remoulded undrained shear strengths are determined
using unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression (UU) and laboratory miniature
vane (MV) tests.
Pocket penetrometer tests are performed to provide an estimate of the undrained shear
strength of cohesive materials. The undrained shear strength is derived from the force
required to push a steel rod, or an adapter, a given distance into a cohesive soil
sample. Adapters with different diameters are mounted on the steel rod penetrometer
to accommodate a range of undrained shear strength values. The penetration of the
rod or adapter should be such that it is equal to the rod or adapter diameter. The
resistance to penetration is recorded by a spring mounted inside the penetrometer.
The resistance is calibrated to read the undrained shear strength of the soil based on
spring compression. At least three readings are taken on each specimen, and an
average value is used.
3.4.3 Torvane
Torvane tests are used to estimate the undrained shear strength of cohesive soil
samples. Torvane blades are first pushed into the soil, and then rotated until the soil
fails. The device provides an estimate of undrained shear strength based on the
resistance to the rotation measured by a torsion spring.
Selected samples tested in their undisturbed state are remoulded and tested again in
the triaxial apparatus under the same conditions. Comparison of the shear strengths
determined from both the undisturbed and remoulded tests provides an indication of
soil sensitivity. Procedures for performing remoulded tests are also described in BS
1377.
Laboratory miniature vane tests are used to measure the undrained shear strength of
cohesive materials immediately following their recovery, and prior to extrusion from the
sample tube. Vane blades are pushed into the centre of the soil in the sampling tube
until fully embedded. Torque is applied to the vane through a calibrated spring
activated by a motorised pulley and belt system, causing the vane to rotate at a fixed
rate until soil shear failure occurs. A calibration factor is applied to the measured
torque to determine the undrained shear strength. Detailed testing procedures for the
miniature vane test are described in BS 1377.
4.1 General
Pertinent soil parameters can be derived from PCPT data in order assist in the layering
of the soil units and in selecting parameter profiles.
During each test, the cone resistance (qc), the sleeve friction (fs) and the pore water
pressure (u) are continuously measured. The measured data are shown on the
Borehole Logs in Appendix A2 and on the PCPT plots provided in Appendix A3.
The parameters which can be derived from the raw results are:
The methods for the derivation of these parameters are presented below and the
results are presented on the PCPT derived data plots also given in Appendix A3.
The net cone resistance (qnet) is computed by correcting measured cone resistance (qc)
for pore water pressure effects on the net areas of the cone face and behind the
shoulder of the cone (Lunne et al., 1985). Effects of overburden pressure are also
removed to standardise the cone resistance as a function of depth.
where:
The friction ratio (Rf) is the ratio of the sleeve friction to total cone resistance. The ratio
can be used for soil classification (Schmertmann, 1978). Sand typically gives a friction
ratio of less than 2 percent, while the friction ratio of clays is normally in excess of 2 to
5 percent, depending on cone resistance.
The pore pressure ratio (Bq) is the ratio of the excess pore water pressure to the net
cone resistance (Sennesset et al., 1982).
BqB = Δu / qnet
where:
Undrained shear strength, su, can be estimated from piezocone penetrometer tests
using the following equation:
su = qnet / Nkt
where
A preliminary assessment of the Nkt values has been undertaken for this report
primarily using the results of unconsolidated-undrained triaxial tests as the reference
strength.
This preliminary assessment indicates that for the SPD12 location, Nkt factors of
between 14 and 34 are generally considered applicable. This represents a relatively
large range in values for Nkt. The lower bound value of Nkt is in general agreement with
published correlations; the upper bound, however, is higher than may normally be
expected, possibly due to the influences of cementation and high silt content on cone
resistance.
5 GEOLOGICAL SETTING
The Persian Gulf, within which the South Pars Field is located, is a marginal sea
measuring some 1000km in length and 200 to 300km in width and covers an area of
approximately 226,000km2. The average water depth is close to 35m, approaching
100m towards the Straits of Hormuz.
The area represents a shallow tectonic depression, formed in the late Tertiary Period
(approximately 7 million years ago) by warping down of the earth’s crust. At this time
the sea reached a maximum elevation of 150m above present levels, with subsequent
deposition of typical ‘shallow carbonate shelf sea’ materials including limestone, marls,
clastics and evaporites.
Global cooling and the onset of glacial conditions in higher latitudes marked the
beginning of the Flandrian period, some 18,000 years ago. During this time the sea
reached a minimum elevation of approximately 120m below its current level, exposing
the previously deposited marine sediments to sub-aerial and fluvial weathering
processes.
As the climate steadily moderated towards the end of this period and into the beginning
of the Holocene (approximately 10,000 years ago), the Gulf gradually became
inundated once again. However, this process was far from regular and large zones of
the region experienced irregular periods of sub-aerial and marine sedimentation. Post
glacial sedimentation included shelly sands in the shallower zones, clean, carbonate
muds in deeper depressions and impure carbonate muds, or marls, along the axis of
the Gulf.
The presence of gypsum and carbonate cementation in Persian Gulf soils is typical.
Gypsum is encountered either in massive form, as relatively thin layers, or as
disseminated crystals. When high temperatures, low rainfall and frequent winds
combine to produce very high evaporation rates of lagoonal water and seawater, the
resulting high salinities can cause evaporate materials to be deposited. Gypsum is one
of the less soluble of these salts and is therefore precipitated in relatively large
amounts and in various forms, for example:
• Thin crusts of gypsum, usually interbedded with the prevailing sediments, may be
precipitated from standing water in highly restricted lagoons.
Cementation may also occur under hot, arid subaerial and super-saline lagoonal
conditions, similar to those imposed during the sea recessions in the Persian Gulf
which was associated with the glacial periods. Upward movement of the saline
groundwater, induced by high evaporation rates at ground level, transports salts to the
surface were they are precipitated, binding loose sediments to form a hard, cemented
layer of duricrust.
Groundwater movement through, and therefore cementation of, fine grained sediments
is relatively restricted, however, an additional effect of the period in which these soils
were subaerialy exposed was the imposition of over-consolidation characteristics by
the processes of desiccation and the removal of overburden by erosion.
In conclusion, as a result of the depositional history of Persian Gulf sediments, the soils
and their subsequent digenesis can be extremely variable. In particular the distribution
and occurrence of the predominantly carbonate materials commonly encountered in
the top 100m of the sediment column tend to be laterally and vertically variable.
Occasionally this lateral variability can occur over relatively short distances with
attendant significance for offshore foundation design.
6 SOIL STRATIGRAPHY
6.1 General
Based on the borehole sampling, laboratory testing and PCPT results, a simplified
stratigraphy has been determined for the purpose of geotechnical design at the each of
the SPD12 and SPD13 borehole locations.
The general soil conditions primarily consist of very silty carbonate clays, very soft near
the seabed and increasing in strength to become hard at depth. The boreholes reveal
local layers of cemented very weak to moderately weak siliceous calcarenite and
variably cemented clays and silts.
The general stratigraphy for the SPD12 and SPD13 locations are presented in Tables
T2.1 and T2.2, respectively. More detailed lithology is presented in the Borehole Logs
in Appendix A2.
The soil conditions are generally consistent with our knowledge and experience of the
area.
6.1.1 SPD12
The soil conditions disclosed by the boreholes performed at the SPD12 location
predominantly comprise very silty carbonate clays with varying degrees of cementation
and cemented inclusions. Between 24.0 and 26.0 metres, a layer of weak to
moderately weak calcarenite was encountered. The materials are generally moderately
overconsolidated in the top 25 m, becoming lightly overconsolidated with depth. The
undrained shear strength profile increases from very soft at the seabed to very hard at
the terminal depth of the borehole. The materials encountered are, in the main,
carbonate in nature (carbonate content greater than 50%).
The clay materials are generally of intermediate to high plasticity, although plotting
close to the A-line reflecting the very high silt contents, a characteristic that is further
supported by the results of the grain size distribution tests. The trend of reducing
liquidity index with depth is consistent with what would be expected for the soil
conditions encountered. The near surface materials exhibit water contents between
approximately 40% and 60%, which is consistent with the very soft consistency of the
materials and the relatively low bulk densities of 1.6 to 1.7 Mg/m3 observed. With
depth, the measured water contents are lower, in the range of approximately 20% to
35%, and shear strength generally increases.
The undrained shear strength measurements show reasonably consistent trends. The
index strength tests (torvane and pocket penetrometer) show some wider scatter which
is commonly observed for these test types, particularly in clays with significant
secondary constituents and where variable degrees of cementation is encountered.
The laboratory vane tests show some divergence from the UU triaxial measured
values, particularly between 9.1 and 24.0 metres, possibly due to the influences of high
silt content and cementation. Below approximately 48 metres, a number of layers
exhibit varying degrees of cementation and cemented inclusions, which is reflected in a
broader scatter of shear strength data.
The values of sensitivity determined from the results of the UU triaxial tests indicate
that the materials are generally of low to medium sensitivity, broadly consistent with
values that would be expected for the materials encountered. However, the values of
remoulded undrained shear strength measured using the laboratory vane are very low,
possibly due to a number of factors, including the scale of the test and the influences of
cementation and particle size distribution. These values are considered to be
unreliable.
6.1.2 SPD13
The soil conditions disclosed by the boreholes performed at the SPD13 location
predominantly comprise very silty carbonate clays with varying degrees of cementation
and cemented inclusions. The SPD13 location is characterised by a number of variably
cemented layers of clay, silt and sand of varying thickness. A very weakly cemented
sand layer was observed between approximately 38.4 and 39.3 m and a weakly
cemented silt layer between 66.4 and 67.5 m. The materials are generally moderately
overconsolidated in the top 20 m, becoming lightly overconsolidated with depth. The
undrained shear strength profile increases from very soft at the seabed to very hard at
the terminal depth of the borehole. The materials encountered are, in the main,
carbonate in nature (carbonate content greater than 50%).
The clay materials are generally of intermediate to high plasticity, although plotting
close to the A-line reflecting the very high silt contents. The trend of reducing liquidity
index with depth is consistent with what woulded expected for the soil conditions
encountered. The very near surface materials exhibit water contents between
approximately 40% and 60%, which is consistent with the very soft consistency of the
materials and the relatively low bulk densities of 1.75 to 1.95 Mg/m3. With depth, the
measured water contents are lower, in the range of approximately 20% to 35%, and
shear strength generally increases.
The undrained shear strength measurements show reasonably consistent trends. The
index strength tests (torvane and pocket penetrometer) show some wider scatter which
is commonly observed for these test types, particularly in clays with significant
secondary constituents and where variable degrees of cementation is encountered.
The laboratory vane tests show broadly consistent results with the UU triaxial
measured values. Particularly below approximately 38 metres, a number of layers
exhibit varying degrees of cementation and cemented inclusions, which is reflected in a
broader scatter of shear strength data.
The reports present the interpreted soil conditions from the results of the seismic
surveys and the near-surface soil conditions revealed by samples recovered from drop
cores.
The results of geophysical survey programmes broadly agree with soil conditions
revealed by the geotechnical site investigation, and are briefly summarised below for
comparison. Where soil sampling was performed across the surveyed area, those
points closest to the borehole locations are considered.
Appendix A4 presents summary tables of the soil sample descriptions and undrained
shear strength data taken from Fugro’s Preliminary Field Reports for the drop cores.
The engineering reports present and discuss the results of tests performed as part of
the geophysical survey in greater detail.
