PROJECT REPORT

FOR

EFFLUENT TREATMENT PLANT AT

M/S XXXXXXX BEANS AND SPICES

REPORT SYNOPSIS

1. General design considerations for Effluent treatment plant

2. Details of civil structures incorporated
Introduction

M/s XxXxxxxxx Beans and Spices is a cocoa seed processing unit located at (location).
The cocoa seed undergoes fermentation and drying and the dry processed seed is sold to buyers.
The effluent produced while fermenting will be high in organic matters and it needs to be treated
properly before disposal to ground.

In order to meet the legal as well as social requirements, it is proposed to treat the effluent
to meet the stipulations of Kerala state Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) before disposal. For the
purpose of design of the Effluent treatment System, maximum effluent generation at 200litres/day
is predicted and assumed for design purposes.

The ETP has been located underground on the eastern side of the building. Minimum
distances from nearest buildings and water bodies as per PCB guidelines are strictly followed in
locating the ETP. The soil condition in the plot facilitates easy percolation, and the waste water
shall be disposed off by percolation.
Design Considerations
The Effluent from the complex is expected to have the following characteristics

Table 2.1
Expected characteristics of raw Influent
Sl. No. Parameter Units Sewage
1 pH pH units 5.0-7.0
2 BOD mg/l 4000-6000
3 COD mg/l 6000-9000
4 Suspended Solids mg/l 1500-2500

Treatment Process

The Effluent from the processing unit will be screened initially to remove any coarse
matters in the stream and will enter directly to the Up-flow Anaerobic Filter unit (UAF). Anaerobic
bacteria growing in the UAF will consume the organic matter and convert them into Methane,
carbon di oxide and water. The Treatment system will have enough holding time to consume more
than 95% of the organic matter in the influent. The overflow from the UAF will be collected in
disinfection tank and for disinfecting the effluent using sodium hypochlorite and it then passes
through a gravitational sand filter, where the water flows down a sand bed and removes all the
suspended matter in it. The outlet from sand filter will be fed to the soak pit for percolation to
ground.

The expected characteristics of the treated effluent are given below.

CONCLUSION
Since the Effluent generation is very low, providing longer retention time is not a limiting
factor. So Anaerobic Treatment is proposed for treating the effluent. The system is designed with
minimum operation cost and maximum conversion as the main criteria and Anaerobic Treatment
is the best possible way to achieve both. The treated effluent will satisfy the required standards put
forward by KSPCB for disposal in land. The methane gas produced from the anaerobic reactor can
be used in the processing unit if required.
