Answer the following questions.

1. What are the characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases?

- Solid has compact atoms that makes it hard and disables it to flow or copy the shape of its

container. Liquid has less compact atoms compared to solid that causes it to flow and easily

copy the shape of its container. Gas on the other hand have atoms that are widely spread to the

point that it cannot be easily seen by our naked eye.

2. Give ways on the proper use and handling solid, liquid and gas found at home and in

school.

- Solid things must be held with care because these may cause injury due to its hardness.

Liquid must be kept in a sealed and leak-free container to avoid spills and gases should be kept

as well safely in a container and must not be released in a place where it can be inhaled easily

by people around.

3. Describe changes in materials based on the effect of temperature:

a. Solid to liquid
- Solid that turns into liquid is commonly cause by high temperature. Raise in temperature

weakens the bond of the atoms of solid that makes it less compact just like what happens to an

ice melting.

b. Liquid to solid

- It is commonly caused by low temperature just like what happens to water turning into ice

inside a refrigerator, the process is called freezing.

c. Liquid to gas

- This shows how evaporation works. Due to high temperature, particles of liquid becomes

lighter and turns in gas particles just like what happens to boiling water.

d. Solid to gas

- It is called sublimation that is usually done through burning, an example of this is burning of

wood where some of it’s particles become a part of smoke.
