23. Description of Topics Covered
Topic Title Description
(e.g. chapter/experiment
title)
INTRODUCTION TO Mechanical design is a complex process, requiring many skills.
DESIGN Extensive relationships need to be subdivided into a series of simple
tasks. This chapter covers the basic concepts of designing and how
it’s practically work in competitive working environment.

MATERIALS The selection of a material for a machine part or a structural member

is one of the most important decisions the designer is called on to
make. The decision is usually made before the dimensions of the part
are established. This chapter cover the various types of materials
available in market and a process for design engineers how to do
selection of materials for specific application.
LOAD AND STRESS This chapter begins with a review of equilibrium and free-body
ANALYSIS diagrams associated with load-carrying components. It cover the
nature of forces before attempting to perform an extensive stress or
deflection analysis of a mechanical component. An extremely useful
tool in handling discontinuous loading of structures employs
Macaulay or singularity functions. Singularity functions are
described.
FAILURE RESULTING In this chapter, the relations between strength and static loading is
FROM STATIC considered in order to make the decisions concerning material and its
LOADING functionality.
FATIGUE FAILURE The behavior of machine parts is entirely different when they are
RESULTING FROM subjected to time varying loading. In this chapter we shall examine
VARIABLE LOADING how parts fail under variable loading and how to proportion them to
successfully resist such conditions.
SHAFT AND SHAFT This chapter cover the complete designing of shafts and keys in
COMPONENTS details keeping in view the static and dynamic loading conditions.
SCREWS, FASTENERS, An overwhelming variety of fasteners are available for the designer’s
AND THE selection. This chapter is mainly focused on the design non-
DESIGN OF permanent fastener and special attention is given to Screws and
NONPERMANENT Fasteners.
JOINTS

MECHANICAL Springs are mass-produced and ingenious configurations have been

SPRINGS found for a variety of desired applications. This chapter will cover
the more frequently used types of springs, their necessary parametric
relationships, and their design.
