Ch-10 Online Information

 Living in a connected world means that there is a lot of information

available for individuals to find.
 However, it can be difficult to find good quality information.
 When you find good quality information, it is important that you know how
to use it appropriately.
 Information is available from a wide range of sources. These can either be
primary sources, which are those that you have created yourself, or
secondary sources, which are those that have been created by someone
else.

What Search engines do?

A search engine provides users with a way to find information in web pages
stored on web servers. Eg Google

How it works?

 Users enter keywords that describe the information they want to find.
 It then compares the keywords with those in its database of web pages
and
 It returns the results that are the closest match to the given keywords.

Keywords

 Keywords are the words or search terms that a user types into a search
engine in order to look for matching information.
 Only enter the important words
 Keep it simple and do not add too many keywords

Search types- to specify the type of information (image search, voice

search)

Search tools- to filter the results that the search engine returns (by date,
time, country)

Suggested Sites and Auto-Fill

• Some search engines give results using autofill as soon as you start to type
keywords into it.

• Some browsers also allow you to choose a search engine so that you can type
keywords directly into the browser’s address bar.

• Search engines suggest sites that users might be interested in visiting.

• These suggested sites can be based on popular searches made by other users
or your own browsing history.

Search Syntax
AND (+)

Adding + between words will return only results that match both words.

NOT (-)

Adding - before a word will return only results that do not include that word.

PHRASE MATCHING (“”)

Placing speech marks around a group of words will return only results that

include the whole phrase with the words in that specific order.

Searching Techniques(just to know)
• Add more keywords to narrow down the search.

• Search by the type of object you are searching for e.g. image, a web page,
news, maps, videos to narrow down the search.

• Use the advanced search facilities of the search engine to select options that
are relevant to your search.

• Search by date/language/location as appropriate to focus the search results.

• Use more than one search engine. Different search engines give different
results.

• Use Boolean terms such as AND and NOT to filter the results to make them
