PERFORMANCE TASK IN GENERAL BIOLOGY 1

A. Goal:
You should be able to use your understanding of cellular respiration and
photosynthesis in advocating sustainable local livelihood practices by preparing
simple fermentation set up using locally available products (e.g fruits, crops,
etc.) to produce wine or vinegar.

B. Performance Task Scenario:

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in cooperation with the Bureau of
Food and Drugs Administration (BFDA) currently embark on a joint-project that
aims to involve local communities to consider alternative livelihood opportunities
by utilizing their local plants and resources. The first stage of the project
involves key areas in SOCCSKSARGEN because these areas are rich in
agricultural crops and fruits such as coconut, rice, banana, etc. The DTI and
BFDA suggested that the project in these areas will focus on wine-making or
vinegar-making as a viable source of livelihood.

You are a food technologist who works for BFDA and you are tasked to create
a generic process of producing wine or vinegar that makes use of available
plants and/or resources from SOCCSKSARGEN. The process must be properly
documented in written report (scientific paper) containing the following
components:
a. Objectives
b. Materials to be used
c. Procedure (in flowchart form)
d. Rationale for the Procedure
e. Results and Discussions
f. Conclusions
g. References

Your written output (scientific paper) will be evaluated based on the following
criteria: content accuracy; use of cost-effective materials; discussion of
scientific principles; professional writing. The evaluators will be composed
of technical experts from BFDA, DTI, and representatives from the local
communities in SOCCSKSARGEN.
