Big Picture

Week 1-3: Unit Learning Outcomes (ULO): At the end of the unit, you are expected to

a. Demonstrate abilities in Lettering which is a free-hand drawing.

Big Picture in Focus: ULOa. demonstrate abilities in Lettering

which is a free-hand drawing

Metalanguage

In this section, the most essential materials with its corresponding definition and actual
picture used in the course and techniques to demonstrate ULOa will be administered. You
will be using these materials and techniques all throughout this subject. Always apply these
techniques in every plate. Please refer to these materials and techniques in case you will
encounter difficulty in understanding educational concepts.

Essential Knowledge

To perform the aforesaid big picture (unit learning outcomes) for the first three (3)
weeks of the course, you need to provide and familiarize the drawing instruments and its
uses accordingly. Please note that you are not limited to exclusively refer to these
resources. Thus, you are expected to utilize other books, research articles and other
resources that are available in the university’s library e.g. ebrary,
search.proquest.com etc.

Drawing Instruments
These are used to prepare drawings easily and accurately. The accuracy of the drawings
depends largely on the quality of instruments. With instruments of good quality, desirable
accuracy can be attained with ease. It is, therefore, essential to procure instruments of as
superior quality as possible (Bhatt, 2011).

Drawing Instrument How it Looks Like

1. Drawing Table or any plain table
where you will be comfortable to
draw with.

2. Drawing Plates
➢ Papers where you are going to
draw.
➢ It should be tough and strong. It
should be uniform in thickness and
as white as possible. When the
rubber eraser is used on it, its fibers
should not disintegrate. Good
quality papers must be used so that
the ink does not spread.
➢ Papers are available in different
sizes and varieties. For this course
you are going to used A4 in the first
3 weeks and A3 size paper al
throughout this subject.
3. T-Square
➢ This is used only for drawing
horizontal lines. It consists of a
stock and a blade. The stock of the
T-square is held firmly with the left
hand against the working edge of
the board or table.

4. Set Squares
➢ These are triangular in shape with
one of the angles as right angle. The
30°-60° set square of 250 mm
length and 45° set square of 200
mm length are widely used in
colleges and universities.
➢ Used for drawing all straight lines
except the horizontal lines which are
usually drawn with the T-square.
Vertical lines can be drawn through
the combination of the T-square and
the set squares.

5. Triangular Scales
➢ It may be flat or of triangular cross-
section.
➢ It helps in marking measurements
from the scale to the drawing paper
accurately.
➢ Used to transfer the true or relative
dimensions of an object to the
drawing.
6. Drawing Pencils (Lead)
➢ Wooden and the grade of a pencil
lead is usually shown by figures and
letters marked at one of its ends. H
and 2H pencil should be most likely
used since it is light so that the lines
are faint, and can be easily erased.
HB denotes the medium grade so it
darker than H and 2H.
➢ instead of wooden pencil,
mechanical clutch pencils with a
different lead size and grade like 5
mm, 4 mm and H, 2H, HB etc., are
also available so that sharpening
won’t be needed anymore.

7. Inking Pen or Technical Pen (ink)

➢ Used for drawing in ink
➢ It can be in different sizes but the
sizes that will be utilized in the whole
course will only be 0.5mm and
0.1mm.
➢ The pen should be kept sloping at
about 60° with the paper in the
direction of drawing the line and the
end of the nibs should be slightly
away from the edge of the T-square
or set-square.
➢ In drawing circles and arcs of
circles, inking attachment should be
fitted in place of the pencil leg in the
compass.
8. Eraser (Rubber)
➢ It should not spoil the surface of the
paper.
➢ As much as possible should be
dust-free to maintain the neatness
of your drawing plates.

9. Pins, Clips or adhesive tapes such

as masking tape
➢ used to fix the drawing paper on the
drawing table. Clips or adhesive
tapes are often used instead of the
pins.
➢ masking tapes are highly
recommended since its adhesion is
not that strong yet can hold your
plates at the desired duration.
10. Drawing Compass with
interchangeable pencil and pen legs
➢ Used for drawing circles and arcs of
circles.
➢ Consists of two legs hinged together
at its upper end. A pointed needle is
fitted at the lower end of one leg,
while a pencil/pen is inserted at the
end of the other leg.

LETTERING

➢ It is a free-hand sketching of letters, numbers and characters.

➢ Lettering is done in writing of titles, dimensions, notes and other important particulars
on a drawing plate.
➢ It should be done properly in clear, legible and uniform style or else it may spoil the
whole drawing.
➢ Since it is a freehand drawing, use of drawing instruments other than
➢ Drawing Pencil preferably HB or H;
1. T-Square
2. Triangular Scale
3. Rubber Eraser
4. Drawing Paper
5. (2) Rubber Eraser;
➢ will be discouraged. Hence, efficiency in the art of lettering can be achieved by
careful and continuous practice.
➢ It is the first step to the preparation of scale-drawing, a drawing with the aid of
instruments.

Single-Stroke Letters
➢ The simplest forms of letters and are usually employed in most of the engineering
drawings.
➢ The thickness of the line of the letter should be obtained in one stroke of the pencil.
➢ Horizontal Lines of letters should be drawn from left to right.
➢ Vertical Lines of letters should be drawn from top to bottom.

Two (2) Types of Single-stroke Letters:

1. Vertical Uppercase Letters and Numerals - all characters are in vertical position and
has its own stroke

Note:
➢ Letter “I” is the shortest letter since it is only 1 unit wide.
➢ Letter “W” is the widest among all the letters in the alphabet since it is 8 units wide.
It is the only letter over 6 units wide.
➢ The letters “ T,O,M,Q,V,A,X and Y” are 6 units wide.
➢ All other remaining letters such as “B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, N, P, R, S, U, and Z”

DIMENSIONING
➢ The purpose of dimensioning is to provide a clear and complete description of an
object.
➢ A complete set of dimensions will permit only one interpretation needed to construct
the part.
➢ Dimensioning should follow these guidelines:
1. Accuracy: correct values must be given.
2. Clearness: dimensions must be placed in appropriate positions.
3. Completeness: nothing must be left out, and nothing duplicated.
4. Readability: the appropriate line quality must be used for legibility.

THE TRIANGLE WHEEL

Most inclined lines are drawn at standard angles using the 45º x 45º triangle and the 30º x
60º triangle.
In addition to drawing angles of 90º, 45º, 30º, and 60º, triangles can be combined to draw
angles of 15º increments.

Week 8-9: Unit Learning Outcomes (ULO): At the end of the unit, you are expected to
c. Demonstrate abilities to draw a detailed plan.

Big Picture in Focus: ULOc. Demonstrate abilities to draw a detailed

plan.

Metalanguage

Metalanguage In this section, the most essential materials with its corresponding
definition and actual picture used in the course and techniques to demonstrate ULOa will
be administered. You will be using these materials and techniques all throughout this
subject. Always apply these techniques in every plate. Please refer to these materials and
techniques in case you will encounter difficulty in understanding educational concepts.

Essential Knowledge
To perform the aforesaid big picture (unit learning outcomes) for the next (3) weeks
of the course, you need to the different pictorial drawings that is used to draw an object;
know how to draw isometric figures; know how to draw the orthographic projections; and
know how to make a detailed plan. Please note that you are not limited to exclusively refer

Pictorial drawings are three principal dimensions (width, height, and depth) of an
object. It illustrates the object the same way people are used to view in everyday life.
1. Axonometric Drawings

The angles of the axis are measured with respect to each other. The are 3
kinds of axonometric drawings:

a. Dimetric Drawings
• The angle between two axes are equal.
b. Trimetric Drawings
• The angle of all the three axes are not equal.
c. Isometric Drawings
• The angles of all the three axes are equal.

(a) (b) (c)

2. Oblique Drawings
They are characterized by the vertical axis and a horizontal axis for the two
dimensions of the front and a third axis of either 30, 45 or 60 digress.

3. Perspective Drawings

Perspective is a geometric method of representing on paper the way that objects

appear in real life i.e. they get smaller and closer together the further away they are
from the eye of an observer.  It is the most realistic of all pictorial drawings.  It is
is the way real three-dimensional objects are pictured in a photograph that has a
two-dimensional plane.  Perspective or central projection is used in creative art or
technical sketching but seldom in technical drawing.

ISOMETRIC DRAWING

The representation of the objects as shown above are called isometric drawings.
This is one of a family of three-dimensional views called pictorial drawings. In an isometric

drawing, the object's vertical lines are drawn vertically, and the horizontal lines in the width
and depth planes are shown at 30 degrees to the horizontal. When drawn under these
guidelines, the lines parallel to these three axes are at their true (scale) lengths. Lines that
are not parallel to these axes will not be of their true length.

1. Drawing an isometric box 30 mm length x 40mm length x 60mm height using the T-
square and 30 x 60 triangle.
a. Draw the lines with the T-square as the base of the 30x60 triangle.
b. Measuring the sides using the triangle scale and marking it with a pencil.
c. Draw the other lines of the box.
d. Finish the box by drawing the remaining lines.

2. Drawing an isometric figure as shown.

a. Imagine the figure as a box.

ORTHOGRAPHIC PROJECTION
An Orthographic projection is a 2-D representation of a 3-D object. The 2-D drawing
represents different sides of an object.
Engineers, architects and designers "see" objects in pictorial mental images. They must
convert pictorial ideas into orthographic form for production. Workers and others must
convert the orthographic drawings back into pictorial images, in order to analyze the shapes
and use the information. The transition from pictorial - to orthographic - to pictorial is a
constant process.
Six views of an orthographic projection are shown.

Typically, an orthographic projection drawing consists of three different views: a

front view, a top view, and a side view. Occasionally, more views are used for clarity.
1. The standard views arrangement in First Angle Projection and Third Angle
Projection are shown and its symbol.

2. Placing hidden lines in projections.

a. Hidden lines are used to show surfaces that are not directly visible. All
surfaces must be shown in all views. If an edge or surface is blocked from
view by another feature, it is drawn using a hidden line.
b. The hidden line is drawn like a broken line with a line approximately 1mm in
length and a space of approximately 1mm, using a 0.1 unipin.

c. Hidden lines should always begin and end with a dash. An exception is
when the hidden line begins or ends at a parallel visible or hidden line.

d. Placing hidden lines in the projections should be visualized in the views as

shown.

3. Placing projection lines in figures.

a. Projection lines are place, for example in the third angle projection, to project
the front view to top view, front view to right view and the right view to top
view as shown.

b. The projection lines are drawn like broken lines, with a line approximately
4mm in length and a space approximately 2mm, using a 0.1 unipin.

c. Hidden lines should always begin and end with a dash.

d. The corners and edges are projected from one view to another. A 45
degrees line is drawn, for example in the third angle projection, so you can
project the right view to the top view. If the projection line overlaps the figure,
it is then omitted (red projection lines) as shown.

DETAILED PLAN
Detailed Plans are often for technical purposes such as architecture, engineering,
or planning. Their purpose of these plans is to clearly and accurately capture all the
geometric features of a site, building, product or component. The purpose of these plans is
either to portray an existing place or object, or to convey enough information to allow a
builder or manufacturer to realize a design.
The term "plan" may casually be used to refer to a single view, sheet, or drawing in a
set of plans. More specifically a plan view is an orthographic projection looking down on the
object, such as in a floor plan.

A detailed plan is a type of technical drawing, which is part of the documentation needed
to build an engineering product or architecture. Typically in architecture these could
include civil drawings, architectural drawings, structural drawings, mechanical
drawings, electrical drawings, and plumbing drawings. In engineering, these drawings show
all necessary data to manufacture a given object, such as dimensions and angles. Samples
of detailed plans are shown below.
