MECH 412- Machine Design II Spring

2024
Assignment # 3 (CLO 2 and 3)
Due: Monday February 12, 2024

Notes and Instructions:

• This is a group assignment. Students in a group must contribute equally in completing the
assignment problems. Intergroup discussion is allowed but at the end, each group must
complete the assignment independently.
• Copying from the textbook solution manual, from another group’s work or from elsewhere is
strictly forbidden and it will be considered as cheating and will be penalized heavily.
• All details of calculations, including intermediate sketches and well-labelled free-body
diagrams, as needed, together with equations of equilibrium and other necessary equations,
must be clearly presented.

Questions:

PART A: Bevel Gears

1. A 20-pressure angle straight-tooth bevel pinion having 14 teeth and a diametral pitch of 6
teeth/in drives a 32-tooth gear. The two shafts are at right angles and in the same plane. Find:
(a) The cone distance
(b) The pitch angles
(c) The pitch diameters
(d) The face width
2. The dimensions of a pair of bevel gears are given in the Figure. The gear G delivers 5 kW of
power at 500 rpm to the output shaft. The bearings A and B are mounted on the output shaft
in such a way that the bearing B can take radial as well as thrust load, while the bearing A
can take only radial load. Determine the reactions at the two bearings.
3. The figure shows a 16T 20° straight bevel pinion driving a 32T gear, and the location of the
bearing centerlines. Pinion shaft a receives 2.5 hp at 240 rev/min. Determine the bearing
reactions at A and B if A is to take both radial and thrust loads.
PART B: Helical Gears

4. A parallel helical gearset uses a 20-tooth pinion driving a 36-tooth gear. The pinion has a
right-hand helix angle of 30, a normal pressure angle of 25, and a normal diametral pitch
of 4 teeth/in. Find:
(a) The normal, transverse, and axial circular pitches
(b) The normal base circular pitch
(c) The transverse diametral pitch and the transverse pressure angle
(d) The addendum, dedendum, and pitch diameter of each gear

5. A parallel helical gearset consists of a 19-tooth pinion driving a 57-tooth gear. The pinion has
a left-hand helix angle of 30, a normal pressure angle of 20, and a normal module of 2.5
mm. Find:
(a) The normal, transverse, and axial circular pitches
(b) The transverse diametral pitch and the transverse pressure angle
(c) The addendum, dedendum, and pitch diameter of each gear

6. The decision has been made for the design of parallel helical gear to use n = 20, Pt = 6
teeth/in, and ψ = 30 for a 2:1 reduction. Choose a suitable pinion and gear tooth count to
avoid interference.

7. Gear 2, in the figure, has 16 teeth, a 20° transverse pressure angle, a 15° helix angle, and a
module of 4 mm. Gear 2 drives the idler on shaft b, which has 36 teeth. The driven gear on
shaft c has 28 teeth. If the driver rotates at 1600 rev/min and transmits 6 kW, find the radial
and thrust loads on each shaft.
8. Consider a 4:1 reduction unit shown in the figure below. The module is 5 mm and the
number of teeth of the pinion is 18. The helix angle is 25 and normal pressure angle is
20. The pinion is rotating at 1200 rpm and the power output is 30 kW. Make a three-
dimensional sketch of the gear and the gear shaft, and show the forces acting on the gear and
the bearing reactions at A and B. Calculate the reactions at A and B. Decide which bearing
should be carrying a thrust load.
