1. PREFACE
F600-Blue Line Metro is a part of King Abdul Aziz International Airport Development
Project in Jeddah – Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The development is to construct a new
640,000m² passenger terminal, associated buildings and infrastructures to increase
the airport capacity to 30 million passengers per year.
2. PURPOSE OF REPORT:
This method statement report describes the execution of bored cast in-situ concrete
piles for the F600-Blue Line Metro. Diameter & depth as stated in the approved shop
drawings.
F600-Blue line metro consists from 7 piers with 4 piles of each.

4. CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURE:
4.1.Pre-Drilling Works
Prior to piles execution, the exact position of the pile will be marked. Minor
corrections are expected during driving the casing. The final position will be taken
as-built purposes. Upon completion the surveyor will provide the cut-off level.
4.3.Pile Drilling
As the pile center is affixed on ground, two reference points will also be affixed
(1.0m away from pile edge), the drilling rig equipped with auger shall be allocated
directly above pile center point. Verticality of machine shall be assured through the
“bubble” affixed on mast and through the spirit level. Pre-drilling to about 2.0m
shall take place and the temporary casing (6.0m maximum length below cut-off
level depends on the location) is inserted in the drilled hole. The verticality of the
temporary casing is adjusted to meet the specifications. Casing protruding distance
above working platform level is (0.5 – 1.0m).
Drilling shall be continued using auger and bucket (Figure 1). Water might be
supplied during drilling (if required) keeping it above working ground level in order
to support the sides of the hole. The drilled hole depth will be monitored by taking
depth measurements (as per instructions). Verticality is checked during drilling by
machine mast bubble and spirit level. Drilling depth is measured by the drilling
machine computer or manually by measuring tape attached with weight. Before
steel cage installation, bottom of the hole shall be cleaned by using the bucket to
remove the sediments.
In case very hard or rocky strata appears, rock cutter buckets (Figure 2) is to be
used to overcome these layers.
Continuous cleaning of drilled out materials will be in progress; all these materials
shall be stockpiled in approved locations before shifting to the outside of site area
as per CM instructions. Pile construction report is attached (Attachment 1).
THE ENGINEER: King Abdulaziz International THE CONTRACTOR:
Airport Development Project
Cage parts shall be connected using mechanical couplers at piers from 3 to 5 and
using overlap (tack welded) for 1, 2, 6 and 7.
4.5.Concrete Casting
The ready-mix concrete will be delivered to site according to approved mix design.
When the pile is ready for concreting, the tremie pipe (10" dia.) with hopper is
lowered down to the bottom of the hole and lifted leaving about 30-50cm from hole
tip. First concrete quickly falls downwards which improves the cleaning of the hole
bottom. Immediately afterwards, concrete starts to flow normally pushing upwards
the first concrete. During this time additional concrete mix is poured into the
hopper ensuring continuous flow downwards in the tremie pipe and then upwards in
the pile hole around the tremie pipe. Always minimum embedment depth of (≥
1.5m) of tremie pipe tip under concrete surface level will be assured (Figure 9).
Clear marks on the tremie pipe will be used to show that the tremie pipe
embedment depth in the casted concrete. Concrete will be placed without such
interruption that would allow previously placed patch to harden.
As the pile is executed from working platform level which is at least 1.0m above
cut-off level, no part of the working concrete will be in direct expose with the
weather of no protection precautions are needed.
4.6.Casing Removal
Once the concrete has reached the required cut-off level, the tremie pipe is to be
removed and the temporary casing shall be removed (Figure 10).
THE ENGINEER: King Abdulaziz International THE CONTRACTOR:
Airport Development Project
4.7.Material Specifications
Concrete mix design along with all required certificates and testing will be
submitted by main contractor for approval.
4.8.Testing
As requested by designer or consultant, the executed piles are to be tested by:
4.9.Quality Assurance
4.9.1. Pre-execution preparations
Performance lab test for concrete mix to be used (time of delivery to site / until
casting and temperature changes to be taken into account).
Cement : Water
2 : 1
Tremie method shall be used to fill the tubes by insertion of the tremie hose inside the
tube till reaching near the tube bottom, and then the grout mix will be fed continuously
until it comes out from the access tube. Knowing that water in the access tube will come
out while feeding grout mix.
