5.0 METHODOLOGY
Backfilling shall be carried out immediately after the pipeline has been laid along with OFC duct in the trench,
inspected and approved by the Company/Consultant, so as to provide a natural anchorage for the pipeline, thus
avoiding long exposure of coating to high temperature, damaging actions of adverse weather conditions, sliding
down of trench sides and pipe movement in the trench. Before backfilling the trench, the contractor must ensure that
all the required work has been completed before backfilling (Catholic protection, anchoring, ballast, etc.).
The Trench in normal soil shall be backfilled to 150mm above the pipe with light soil and for trench in rock shall be
backfilled to 300 mm above the pipe with light soil or sand. The light soil or sand must be free of all hard objects
(stones, gravels, material that has been broken up etc). The different layer (mainly two Top – 300mm Fertile Soil
and the rest up till the trench bottom) shall be backfilled as they were excavated sequentially. The drop height of the

BACKFILLING
filling soil must be limited to the absolute minimum. Filling with sand shall be applicable for rocky flat terrain. The
upper part of backfilling shall be done in consecutive layer. Each layer must be tamped down to avoid hollow
spaces, which might later laid to subsidence. Backfilling is carried out with layers max. 30 cm thick. After
compacting, the soil that has been put back must have the same penetration resistance characteristics as the soil for
the works, and this to a depth of 1 Mtr. This may be checked by the Owner/Owner’s Representative using a
petrograph. The top arable soil of 300 mm shall be put at the original height and free from all foreign objects,
weeds, etc. Before placing the soil back on the working way the sub soil should be raked up to restore the natural
hydraulic permeability of the ground.
If immediate back filling is not possible, a covering of at least 300mm of earth, free of rock and hard lumps shall be
placed over and around the pipe and coating.
TPPL shall furnish materials and install breakers in the trench in steep areas (slope 10% or more )for the purpose of
preventing erosion of the backfill. The type of breakers installed shall be as per the approved IND-NCJ-00-PL-SPL-
0014 drawing & specification. Breakers shall be
constructed of grout bags filled with a mixture of 4: 1 (Sand : Port land cement ) at owner’s direction.
The concrete slabs-HDPE Sheet /Plastic gratings of approved quality (below HT line & Pipeline Crossing) shall be
laid in such a way that there is 300mm layer of soil / Sand between the pipe and the concrete/PVC gratings. Before
backfilling it must be ensured that all the underground utilities have been repaired. The Slab must be placed in dry
trench. Slab center and pipe center must be in same line.
Contractor shall leave the pipe uncovered at certain locations to allow Company to survey the top of the pipe and
the level of the pipeline in the backfield trench. Within 24hours after backfilling, Company shall have carried out
such survey and informed Contractor of any realigning, if required. Thereafter Contractor shall compact the
backfill.
Backfilling in trenches for pipes / drains shall be commenced after test for laying / jointing of pipes / drains are
passed.
Backfilling of trenches for pipes / drains shall be carried out up to top level with suitable material not having
boulders / stone / hard lump soil.
The concrete slabs 150 mm thk/PVC,HDPE (6 to 8 thk)Gratings approved quality shall be provided during the
backfilling at the crossings of high-tension transmission line As Per Standard Drawing-IND-NGL-00-PL-DST-006
Table 1 Refer Concrete slabs shall be utility crossings and over head power line as per job standards enclosed in the
tender, site condition and instructions of Owner / Owner’s representative. Dimensions of precast slabs are 500 mm

Position & cover of pipeline must be checked by PMC / VCS before Back filling.
In water seepage area saddle weight to be installed above the pipe line before backfilling Refer specification.
Back filling shall be done in the same day of lowering, before that holiday check to be done and cleared from PMC
/ VCS. If not possible minimum 300 mm padding will be done immediate after Lowering In.
If any drainage system presence in pipe line route. The same shall be restored before back filling as per VCS
specification.
The TPPL shall ensure that before back filling the protection provided to pipe line &concrete coating, saddle
weight, bank protection etc. Standard Specification Drawing shall be compacted.
Pipe level shall be recorded and shall be submitted with inspection report. Every Weld Joint X,y,z to be taken by
DGPS As per Tender C241112-VCS-BPCL-TENDER-2001
