According to the reading people started using geothermal energy about ten thousand years ago.

Aboriginal people who inhabited North America in the past were one of the first to discover hot springs
and used them as a place to bathe. Roman people also took advantage of their healing powers because
the heat helped them cure eye diseases.

In the present, people use geothermal energy as a power source. The reading says that tapping
geothermal energy can generate electricity without harmful emissions from fossil fuels. The produced
heat provides the physical force to spin turbines. The direct use of warm water is also possible and it can
be used for industrial processes.

There are regions which have better potential than others for developing geothermal systems. These are
volcanically active areas such as New Zealand, Iceland and Japan. In these regions it is suitable to use
geothermal energy because geothermal reservoirs exist close to the earth’s surface and are easily tapped
for power generation.
