TOPIC: PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES

- A prepositional phrase is a group of words that consists of a preposition and its object

Usually preposition can be found before the object

Example : The genie from the brass lamp granted 3 wishes.

The phrases beginning with prepositions are prepositional phrases.

Example : from the brass lamp

The prepositional phrase may come at the beginning of the sentence.

Example : After the history class, I got a rugby training session.


Prepositional phrase often fill the role of an adverb in the sentence. That is, they add something about the action.

Example : I spread out the map on the table.

Prepositional phrases may also follow nouns, with an adjectival function.

Example : The maps on this wall are very ancient.

Prepositional phrases also come before a noun like an attributive adjective. In this situation they will be hyphenated

Example : We take our holidays in very out-of-the-way places.

Prepositional phrases can also be a complement after a linking verb or complex transitive verb.

Example : Make yourselves at home

A verb phrase is a word group that makes up the verb in a sentence.

VERB

- He opened the window.

VERB PHRASES

- He was opening the window

A verb phrase typically consists of a main verb + one or more auxiliaries, of which one may be a modal auxiliary.

Example : Was she feeling ill?

There are some well-known idiomatic word groups that combine with a main verb to function like a modal verb. These are not phrases; instead,
we can call them “modal combinations”.

Example : Would you rather go by taxi?

A phrasal verb is a verb + particle.

Example : We ran into problems.

A verb phrase is the main verb and auxiliary verb that make up the whole verb in a sentence.

Example : You might have run into problems.

TOPIC: ADVERBIAL PHRASES

An adverbial phrase is any phrase that has an adverbial function in a sentence. Adverbial phrases modify the action represented by the verb.

Example :

- George was walking very briskly.


- You have been working too hard.
- Can’t you talk more quietly?
- Leave the rest of the work till tomorrow.
- We can discuss this next Friday.

Types of adverbial phrases

- Adverb modified by an intensifier, moderator, emphasiser, or other adverb


- A prepositional phrase
- A noun phrase
- Adverb of place or time emphasised or modified by another adverb
- The structure noun + preposition + noun, or pronoun + preposition + pronoun
- A complement after a linking verb or after the object of a complex transitive verb
Adverb modified by an intensifier, moderator, emphasiser, or other adverb

- The class today went very well

- I go to school after I have done my prayer.

A noun phrase

- Last holiday, I went to Vietnam with my friends.

Adverb of place or time emphasised or modified by another adverb

- His apartment is up there.

The structure noun + preposition + noun, or pronoun + preposition + pronoun

- One by one the soldiers get shot in that war.

A complement after a linking verb or after the object of a complex transitive verb

- She will be back home after that trip.

Adverbial phrases may also serve as sentence adverbials, representing a comment by the speaker, and standing clear of the main grammatical
structure of the sentence.

Example :

- Our team were most unfortunately delivered bad performance in that competition.
