that can’t be counted.

2. Then, ask them how they count it.

3. Afterwards, tell them to combine the two in a phrase.

4. Lastly, ask the students to explain how they arrived at the final word.

c. Lesson Proper

In communication, especially in speaking and writing, knowing how to use

partitives is very important. It helps us to clarify a specific point of what we want

to talk about, particularly with proportions and quantities. For that reason, we will

learn how to identify and use partitives.

Partitives are words or phrases that show a quantity or part of a whole. In Latin,

the word “partitus,” means relating to a part. Partitives may appear before mass

and count nouns.

Partitives are used to express a clear message.

Examples:

Unclear: Please get me water.

Clear: Please get me a cup of water.

There are two different ways to quantify the different kinds of nouns:

1. UNCOUNTABLE NOUN PARTITIVE

Different measure words for different uncountable nouns

Examples:

1) I need a glass of water for this recipe.

2) I cannot take four cups of coffee a day.

3) My mother needs four pieces of eggs for the egg pie.

Same measure words for similar properties of uncountable nouns

Examples:

1) The plant needs a drop of water.

2) The mosquito needs a drop of blood.

The students will complete the sentence below using a partitive phrase.

1) My father told me to carry a bag of rice.

2) I saw my elder brother helping the old man carrying _________.

1) Rayzer always drinks a cup of coffee in the morning.

2) Kenny ordered ________ at the restaurant.

2. COUNTABLE NOUN PARTITIVES

Examples:

1) I gave a slice of pizza to the street child.

2) I will buy a slice of cake tomorrow.

Both pizza and cake are count nouns, and to state a partition of them, we need to

add the measure word slice to them.

2) My mother told me to eat a piece of fruit every day.

Both paper and fruit are count nouns, and to state a partition of them, we need to

add the measure word piece.

d. Activity

each picture and tell if it is a countable or uncountable noun.

A cup of tea, Uncountable A bunch of bananas, Countable

A bar of chocolate, Countable

A glass of juice, Uncountable
