ADMISSION DEPARTMENT, FACULTY OF COMMERCE, UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN

Dear Sir/Madam,

SUBJECT: POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS

With this letter, I am applying for a postgraduate diploma in Management Information Systems at the
University of Cape Town. With my current interest as an Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
Project Manager, I wish to expand my technical knowledge of information systems and turn my focus towards
its wide-scale applications in Enterprise Systems and Business Process Management. By reading the course
curriculum available online, I have found that the subject material covered will best suit my career goals.
Lastly, the prospect of participating in a mandatory exchange program is an excellent way to observe
divergent information systems, as well as build upon my understanding.

By trade, I specialize in ICT Project Management for Mossel Bay Municipality. As part of my role, I am
responsible for the day-to-day management of the projects within the constraints set out by the ICT Senior
Manager and act as the interface between the Senior Managers, Senior Users, and Senior Suppliers. I ensure
that the project produces the required products as per time, cost, quality, scope, risk, and benefit performance
goals. Additionally, I manage all ICT projects for Mossel Bay Municipality. This includes developing strategies
and implementing solutions to increase project profitability and productivity for the Municipality. Among the
challenges I have faced in this trade, it transpired that my progress has been slowed by my lack of advanced
technical, information systems-related studies.

The postgraduate diploma in management information systems addresses the next step in my professional
development. The information system in the municipalities is changing from manual systems to an AI-based
digital enterprise. This remodelling of government systems implies the need for large investments in
hardware and software infrastructure and people with the right skill set to meet this demand. The combination
of subjects such as ‘System Development Methods and Techniques’,’ Technology’, ‘Project Management’,
and ‘Strategic Management of IT’ in the Informatics path would contribute to my professional ambitions.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the Walter Sisulu University in Eastern
Cape. During my degree, I was very active in many on the campus. I completed an internship in the university
campus while studying, as an E-Learning Assistant for 2 years. This gave me an outlet to apply theoretical
knowledge in a practical setting and sparked my interest in information systems. I was also a rugby player;
the rugby spot taught me how to be a team player and how I can master self-discipline. After graduating from
University, I joined a technological incubator called Cortex Hub in East London. My vision was to build a
technology start-up company. During my time at Cortex Hub, I realized that I still need work-related
experience before I can build I tech company. So, I went to work at Mercantile Bank's Head Office in Sandton,
Gauteng as a junior system support engineer. When I left Mercantile Bank, I joined a Consulting Firm FT
Consulting for more than 5 years where I gained and honed my skills in project management and Information
systems. I completed a project management certificate with Prince 2 at ILX Group. Lastly, I am currently
working for Mossel Bay Municipality one of the most reputable in South Africa.

With all my experience listed, I am in search of bringing my career to the next level. The subjects offered in
this program are specifically in line with my professional goals. I am certain that the knowledge and skills
learnt from my professional experience, university, and extracurricular activities would make me a valuable
addition to the Postgraduate Diploma in Management Information Systems program offered at the University
of Cape Town.

Thank you in advance for considering my application,

Yours faithfully,
