Activity 3: LEARNER- CENTERED PSYCHOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES

1. "Variety is a spice of life." How is this statement applicable in the selection of

instructional strategies? Explain.

o In the realm of teaching, as an educator, it is crucial to know that learners are varied.
They come from different backgrounds, cultures, levels of thinking, behaviors, principles,
attitudes, etc. They are unique. With this diversity, as educators, we should know how to
diversify their needs according to how they can learn easily and effectively. The
uniqueness of every learner makes a teacher more effective and more challenged in a
good way, which can help both their professional and personal growth. In order to cater
to the needs of the learners, teachers must use different strategies, approaches,
techniques, and methods to meet the individual needs of the learners. In this case, the
teacher may use the accommodation technique where, for example, one of the students in
the class has an auditory impairment. If the class needs to watch something about their
lesson, the teacher may give an alternative for the student with an impairment, such that
the teacher may give the lesson in a written way where the student can learn the same
lesson but in a different method. With this approach, it helps the teacher become adaptive
and know how to adjust in order for the learners to accomplish tasks faster and easily in
the most convenient way that is based on their talent, abilities, and interests. The
strategies that the teacher must use are based on what the student needs and how the
learner can overcome difficulties in learning in order to learn effectively. It is more of a
learner-centered teaching approach.

2. "This subject is my Waterloo" - a statement most learners attribute to subjects

they find difficult. If you were the teacher, what motivation and affective
strategies would you use to alter this perception and attitude? Explain

o Learners sometimes tend to give up without even trying or pushing themselves to their
best. If they experience difficulty, they just tell themselves that they can’t do it, which
leads them to lose confidence. As a teacher, the motivation and affective strategies I
would use to alter this perception and attitude are more about giving them words of
encouragement and advice that are based on my own experiences, because I believe that
in order to touch one’s heart, it is about hearing experiences that could inspire them to
change and be better. Words of encouragement, such as they can do it, never let their
mindset about difficulty burden their decisions and actions in life. Inculcating that life is
not just all about doing things easily, but we should also need to be challenged in order to
be strong physically and mentally. And in life, it’s also about overcoming challenges in
order to strengthen and motivate us even more. I will also enforce positive reinforcement,
where if they do something great, giving them appreciation and rewards will make them
feel valued and will also motivate them to do the same thing again. Positive
reinforcement will help to lift their confidence to strive and excel more. I think one of the
strategies that I can use is to collaborate with their parents in order to motivate their child
without giving them the feeling of being pressured, believing that parents are the
foundation of a child's strength. Lastly, and I think the most importantly, is enforcing an
assessment in order for me to know the areas of difficulty for that particular class and
why they said it was difficult in order to help the student overcome those challenges and
help him or her understand the lessons or topics that she or he didn’t understand the most.
