LECTURE READING 10: SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF A STRUCTURE

LATERAL FORCE PROCEDURE FOR SEISMIC ANALYSIS, page 2-210 NSCP 2015

1) Simplified Static – is used up to three storey structures only.

2) Static - is used for structures under 75 m height.
3) Dynamic - is used for structures 75 m or more in height. In seismic analysis minimum
high rise building is 75 m in the Philippines.

SIMPLIFIED STATIC

From section 208.5.1.1, page 2-212 NSCP 2015

STATIC
From section 208.5.2, page 2-214 NSCP 2015
PROBLEM 1.
A five-storey reinforced concrete building will be designed with seismic analysis. The structure is a residential building
5 km from Valley Fault System (active faultline) located at San Mateo, Rizal. The building is a special moment resisting frame
system. The total height of the structure is 17 m and the total seismic dead load of the structure is 40 000 kN. Determine the
base shear?

Since the structure is 5-storey, we will be using static method using the first formula:
Cv I
V = RT W

W = total seismic dead load, page 2-184 NSCP 2015

W = 40 000 kN

SEISMIC IMPORTANCE OR OCCUPANCY FACTOR (I) - depends on how important is your structure

From page 2-185 NSCP 2015

Taken from pages 1-6 to 1-7 NSCP 2015.

Miscellaneous Structures also include agricultural structures like poultry, piggery, greenhouse and the likes.
THEREFORE since the structure is residential, it is a standard occupancy structure I = 1.00

SOIL PROFILE TYPE – depends on what type of soil is the location of your structure. There are 6 soil profile types as stated on
the table beloe taken on page 2-186 NSCP 2015.

From page 2-185, exception, when the soil properties are not known in sufficient detail to determine the soil profile type,
Type SD shall be used.

THEREFORE since we do not know the soil type of San Mateo, Rizal, S = SD

ZONE FACTOR (Z) - depends upon the location on how frequent there is an earthquake . Factors can be found on table below
on page 2-188 NSCP 2015

From seismic map of the Philippine page 2-189 NSCP 2015, there are only two seismic zones in the Philippines
Therefore San Mateo, Rizal is in zone 4 so Z = 0.40

From the table below page2-188 NSCP 2015, there are three seismic source factors
1) Type A - active
2) Type B - dormant
3) Type C - extinct

The active faultlines, trenches and generators are drawn into maps from pages 2-190 to 2-206 NSCP 2015.
Valley Fault System is the only faultline in Metro Manila and it is an active faultline

From the table below page 2-207 , since Valley Fault System is a type A faultline and the building is 5 km
from Valley Fault System, Near Source Factor Nv = 1.6

The value of Cv now can be determine, the structure soil type is SD, Z = 0.40 so Cv = 0.64 Nv
Since Nv = 1.6, so Cv = 0.64 (1.6) and Cv = 1.02
To find structural period T, the section below on page 2-215 NSCP 2015 has a formula.

T = Ct (hn)3/4 = 0.0731 (17)3/4 height = 17 m RC moment resisting frame

T = 0.61 sec

BASIC STRUCTURAL SYSTEM FOR SEISMIC ANALYSIS

1) Bearing Wall System

2) Building Frame System

3) Moment Resisting Frame System – is also a building frame system but members are designed structurally
using flexure or moment, so most of the low rise building in the Philippines are moment resisting frame
system.

4) Cantilever System
From the table 208-11A page 2-223 NSCP 2015 below, since the building in the problem is a special moment
resisting frame system R = 8.50

THEREFORE:

Cv I
V = RT W
1.02(1)
V = (40 000)
8.5(0.61)
V = 7868.85 kN

For the second formula, according to section 208.5.2.1 page 2-215 NSCP 2015, the total design base shear need not
exceed the following

2.5CaI
Vmax = W
R

For the value of near source factor Na, from the tale below on page 2-207 NSCP 2015, since Valley Fault
System is type A and the structure is 5 km from the fault Na = 1.2

From the table below at page 2-207 NSCP 2015, since soil type is SD and Z = 0.40, Ca = 0.44 Na.
Since Na = 1.2, therefore Ca = 0.44 (1.2) and Ca = 0.53

THEREFORE:

2.5CaI
Vmax = W
R
2.5 ( 0.53 ) (1)
= (40 000)
8.5
= 6235.29 kN

SINCE actual V = 7868.85 Kn ¿ Vmax = 6235.29 kN FAIL

THEREFORE: V = 6235.29 kN

For the third formula, the total design base shear shall not be less than the following

Vmin = 0.11 Ca IW
= 0.11 (0.53) (1) (40 000)
= 2332 kN SAFE V ¿ Vmin

For the fourth formula , good only for Zone 4, , the total design base shear shall also not be less than the
following
0.8 Z Nv I
Vmin = W
R
0.8 ( 0.4 )( 1.6 ) (1)
= (40 000)
8.5
= 2409.41 kN SAFE V ¿ Vmin

V = 6235.29 kN ANSWER
