Dear Sir/Madam,

Raffles Institution Indian Cultural Society (ICS) is pleased to inform you that we will be organising Sangamam ’24
again for Secondary Schools offering Tamil Language. We would like to cordially invite your school to take part
in it.

Objectives of Sangamam ‘24:


a) To stress the relevance of the Tamil language among Tamil students and as well as non-Tamil students
b) To instill in the students the passion for the language
c) To create camaraderie amongst participating schools

Sangamam ‘24 will consist of three competitions:


1) Makkal Isai/RAP Fusion Singing,
2) Stand-Up Comedy
3) Thirukkural Couplet Recitation

The overall winner will be awarded the RI-ICS Challenge Trophy only if they participate in all three competitions.

If you are interested to participate in Sangamam ’24, please fill in the registration form (attached below) and
submit it via email to riics.exco@gmail.com. If you have any further queries or clarifications, please contact

General Guidelines

Deadlines
● Deadline for submission of registration forms: 23 February 2023.
● Deadline for submission of videos: 28 March 2023.
○ Finalists will be notified after the judges’ deliberation. Judges’ decision is final.
● Submissions after the deadline will NOT be entertained.

Video and PDF Submission


● For the registration form, label the PDF in the following format,
'SchoolName_TeacherName' and email it to riics.exco@gmail.com.
○ Eg: RafflesInstitution_jegmctheesan
● For videos, please label the participant’s names, school name and the respective
competition accordingly and submit through Google Forms (Link to Google form will be
sent out on 12 February)
○ Eg: CompetitionName_SchoolName
● Further instructions on how and where to submit will be shared upon submission of
registration forms.
Note that any breaking of rules will result in immediate disqualification -2-

1. Makkal Isai/RAP Fusion Singing (மக்கள் இசை/சொல்லிசை கலவை)

Rules and Regulations:


1. Contestants have to take part as a group, comprising of maximum 3 students.
2. The teams can make use of folk music instruments or folk elements e.g parai/live music with
original lyrics (own composition) in their performances.
3. Students are to pick one of the following themes/all of the above for their performance

● தமிழ்மொழி /பண்பாடு

● நட்பு

● தன்முனைப்பு

● சிங்கப்பூரர்கள் /இந்திய சமுதாய முன்னேற்றம்

● பெற்றோர் - பிள்ளைகள் உறவு

4. Voice-overs and voice editing will not be entertained.


5. Submission Format: mp4 video
6. Performance timing should be within 5 minutes.
7. Groups found to have lyrics with vulgarity, obscenity or with sensitive messages will be
disqualified.
8. Three finalists will be chosen from the qualifying round.
9. The same performance from the qualifying round could be used for the final round but a refined
version is preferred.

Criteria:
● Coherence (Accuracy of Notes and Rhythms, Consistency in Quality)
● Folk Flow
● Lyrics
● Originality

2. Thirukkural Recitation (திருக்குறள் மனனப் போட்டி)

Rules and Regulations:

1. Only one non-Indian student can take part in this competition.


2. Students must choose any three couplets (see Annex A) and recite them or deliver it creatively
with or without any musical instrument/background instrumental music.
3. Students should speak about the significance and relevance of one couplet (from the chosen
three)in ENGLISH within one minute.
4. Voice-overs and voice editing will not be entertained.
5. Submission Format: Video, mp4
6. Please ensure the video recording is audible and visible.
7. Students should be appropriately attired during their presentation. (Full school uniform or Indian
traditional wear)

Criteria:
● Pronunciation
● Recitation style and Creativity
● Explaining the relevance of the couplet in English
● Showmanship

3. Tamil Stand-up Comedy ( )

Rules and Regulations:

1. Contestants can take part in this segment as teams of 2 only.


2. Performance timing should be within 8 minutes.
3. Participants should have a theme/story line and incorporate mimicry, humour and songs to add
value to the live performance.
4. You are allowed to use musical instruments eg guitar, drums etc
5. Groups found to have vulgarity, obscenity or with sensitive messages will be disqualified.
6. Submission Format: video, mp4
7. Three finalist teams will be chosen from the qualifying round.
8. The same performance from the qualifying round can be used for the final round but a refined
version is preferred.

● Use of stage
● Sync and team chemistry
● Choice of style and creativity
● Audience Engagement
