GRADE 7

LESSON PLAN IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS

Code: M9GE-IIIb-1
Number of Hours: 1 hour
Lesson: Polygons and convexity
Learning competency:
The learner illustrate polygons: (a) convexity; (b) angles; and (c) sides.
Standard: The learner is able to create models of plane figures and formulate and
solve accurately authentic problems involving sides and angles of a polygon.
References: Mathematics 7 224-239 RM Realistic
OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
1. Illustrate convex polygons.
2. Determine relationship among angles and sides of convex polygons.
3. Derive inductively the relationship of exterior angles of a convex polygons.

ELICIT: 5 minutes
Puzzle Me!
The students will be separated into six groups. The students assemble the
puzzle pieces to form a single figure and name each polygon they see in the
problem.

ENGAGE: 5 minutes

State whether the given figure is polygon or not.

The first row is a polygon, but the second row is not one.

EXPLORE: 5 minutes
Students will identify the given figures, along with the type of polygon and its sides.

Triangle = 3 Octagon = 8

Quadrilateral = 4 Nonagon = 9

Pentagon = 5 Decagon = 10

Hexagon = 6 Undecagon = 11

Heptagon = 7 Dodecagon = 1
EXPLAIN: 20 Minutes

Polygon - is a flat or plane figure, two dimensional closed shape with straight
sides. It does not have curved sides.
• The angles formed by the sides of a polygon are called interior angles of a
polygon.
The angles formed where its sides are extended are called exterior
angles of a polygon.
• The sum of the interior angles of a convex polygon with n sides is given by
s = (n – 2)180°
• The sum of the exterior angles of a convex polygon (one at each vertex) is 360°
Consecutive sides - Sides that share a vertex
Nonconsecutive sides -The vertices that are not adjacent
Consecutive vertices - The two endpoints of any side
Nonconsecutive angles - The vertices that are not adjacent
Diagonal - Segments with endpoints that are non-consecutive vertices

The sum of the Interior angles

Polygon PENTA Is:

P E
3(180)°= 540°

N
Polygon Hexagon Is:

4(180)°= 720°
A
T

Polygon Dodecagon Is:

10(180)°= 1,800°

The sum of the measures of the interior angles of a polygon is equal to (n-2)180°

Ex. Five angles of a hexagon are 156°, 87°, 100°, 95°, and 118°. Find the measure of the
sixth angle.
Sol.
Measure of the 6th angle
Sum of the interior angles = (6-2)180
= (4)180 = 720-(156+87+100+95+118)

= 720-556
=164
= 720

ELABORATE: 10 Minutes
Measure of the interior angle
Exterior Angle of a Polygon
(7x-25)+(5x+1)= 180

180
12x-24 = 180 +¿
(5x+1) 1!
(7x-25)
12x = 180+24
12 x 240
