The Americans are keen to win the race to send human beings to Mars. In 1992, the new boss of
NASA, Dan Goldin, called on the American people to be the first to send explorers to another
planet in the solar system. He reminded them of the symbolic gift carried to the moon and back
by the Apollo 11 mission. It bears a message intended for the crew of the first spaceship to visit
Mars. Goldin thinks it is time to begin the preparation for this historic journey. His speech
echoed the words of the President, who promised that in 2019, 50 years after Neil Armstrong
became the first man to set foot on the moon, the first astronaut would stand on Mars.
By the end of the twentieth century, various unmanned spaceships will have thoroughly
investigated the surface of the planet. But, however clever a robot may be, it cannot match the
type of information which can be gained from direct human experience. The first geologist on
the moon, Harrison Schmitt, was capable of interpreting the story of the landscape on the spot.
Until humans walk on the rod deserts of Mars, we will not be able to determine the history of this
frozen world in any detail.

The La Tomatina is a festival held on a Wednesday towards the end of August in the town of
Bunol in the Valenela region in Spain. The weeklong festival includes music, parades, dancing,
and fireworks.
About 30,000 people come to the tomato fight, while Bunol's population is only 9,000. There are
not many accommodations for people who come to La Tomatina, so many participans stay in
Valencia and travel by bus or train to Bunol, about 38km outside the city.
Many trucks transport tomatoes into the center of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes
come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive. The signal for the beginning of the fight
is firing of the cannon, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for
himself. People who partake in this event are strongly encouranged to wear protective safety
goggles and gloves. In addition, they must squash the tomatoes before throwing for safety
precautions. Another rule is that no one is allowed to bring into this fight anything that may lead
to a more serious fight, such as a glass bottle. People must also stay away from trucks and must
not tear someone else's clothing. Somewhere between an hour and two hours, the fighting ends
and the cannon is fired once more to signal the end. At this point nomore tomatoes can be
thrown. The cleaning process involves the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets, with water
provided from a Roman waterway. People find water to wash themselves, most likely at the
Bunol River.

On average, more than 100,000 wildfires, also called wildland fires or forest fires, destroy two
million hectares of land in the U.S every year. A wildfire moves at speeds of about 20 kilometers
an hour and can last for weeks, consuming everything - trees, brush, homes, and humans – in its
path.
There are three conditions for a wildfire. Oxygen is necessary for a fire to burn. Heat sources
help start the wildfire. Although most wildfires are started by people, natural factors like
lightning, hot winds, and even the sun can all provide enough heat to start a wildfire.
Firefighters fight wildfires by removing the conditions a wildfire to burn. Traditional methods
include using water an fire retardants to put out the fires. Firefighters also fight wildfires with
"controlled burning". These controlled forest fires remove small trees, bushes, and ground litter
from a forest. This will deprive a wildfire of fuel and prevent future forest fires.
Although often harmful and destructive to humans, wildfires play an important role in nature.
Even healthy forests contain dead trees and decaying plant matter. When a fire turns them to
ashes, nutrients return to the soil. They also remove sick plants and harmful insects from a
forest. And by burning through thick leaves and branches, wildfires allow sunlight to reach to
forest floor, making it possible for a new generation of trees to grow.

Education in England
Every child in England between the age of five and fifteen must attend schools. There are
three main types of educational institutions, primary (elementary) schools, secondary schools,
and universities
Like most countries in the world, there are two types of schools in England, independent
schools (fee-paying schools) and state schools in which students do not have to pay tuition fees.
In both types, attendance is compulsory. Morning classes begin at nine o’clock and last until half
past four in the afternoon. After classes, most English children often stay at school and take part
in extracurricular activities like sports, singing and dancing. Schools are open five days a week.
On Saturdays and Sundays there are no lessons. There are holidays at Christmas, Easter and in
summer. In London as in all cities there are two grades of schools for those who will go to work
at fifteen: primary schools for boys and girls between the ages of five and eleven, and secondary
schools for children from eleven to fifteen.
Besides such compulsory lessons as reading, writing, the English language, English
literature, English history, geography, science, and nature study, children in England can take
many optional subjects like drawing, painting, singing, or woodwork to develop their aptitudes.

V. Read the following passage and choose the best answers. (1 point)
Most human beings are awake during the day and sleep all night. Owls live the opposite way.
Owls are nocturnal. This means that they sleep all day and stay awake at night. Because owls are
nocturnal, this means they must eat at night. But finding food in the dark is difficult. To help
them, they have special eyes and ears.
Owls have very large eyes. These eyes absorb more light than normal. Since there is little light
during the night, it is helpful to be able to absorb more of it. This helps owls find food in the
dark.
Owls also have very good hearing. Even when owls are in the trees, they can hear small animals
moving in the grass below. This helps owls catch their prey even when it is very dark.
Like owls, mice are also nocturnal animals. Mice have an excellent sense of smell. This helps
them find food in the dark.

106
Being nocturnal helps mice to hide from the many different animals that want to eat them. Most

We can develop alternative sources of energy, and unless we try we'll never succeed. Instead of
burning fossil fuels we should be conneentrating on more economie uses of electricity, because
electricity can be produced from any sources of energy.
If we didn't waste so much energy, our resources would last longer. We can save more energy by
conservation than we can produce for the same money. Unless we do research on solar energy,
wind power, tidal power, hydroelectric plants ... our fossil fuels will run out and we'll all freeze
or starve to death.
Many countries are spending much more time and money on research because the energy from

THE ISLAND OF PETULIA
Petulia Island is only 5.5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres at its widest point. It lies in
the middle of Lake Donika, and is 3,900 metres above sea level. Petulia has had a small number
of inhabitants for over four centuries. The sun here is extremely hot during the day but
temperatures at night regularly fall well below freezing. The water of Lake Donika is 10 degrees
Celsius all year round.
Before the introduction of motorboats in the 1970s, travelling from Petulia to the nearest
port could take over 20 hours. This journey was therefore made only once a year to buy salt.
Motorboats have now cut the journey time down to three hours, bringing new trade and tourists
to Petulia.
Petulian local inhabitants highly respect their customs and traditions. They have recently
voted against a hotel development plan, so there will be no hotels on the island. Instead tourists
are placed with a family as guests.

TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS IN GREAT BRITAIN
Every nation and every country has its own customs and traditions. In Britain, traditions
play a more important part in the life of the people than in other countries. Englishmen are proud
of their traditions and carefully keep them up. It has been the law for about three hundred years
that on Sundays all theatres are closed, no letters are sent, and only a few papers are published.
Most of English people like gardens. Up to this day, an English family still prefers a house
with a garden to a flat in a modern building with central heating, as did their great grandparents
hundreds of years ago!. Sometimes in big cities where each piece of land is a rare and precious
treasure, the garden in front of the house is just a box of flowers in a little square covered with
cement painted green in imitation of grass!
Great Britain is especially rich in holidays and local traditions, which are quite differept
among Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. Christmas is a great English national holiday but it
is not officially observed in Scotland, except by bank clerks, and all local shops and factories are
still working during this time.

Saving energy means decreasing the amount of energy used while achieving a similar
outcome of end use. Using less energy has lots of benefits - you can save money and help the
environment. Generating energy requires precious natural resources, for instance coal, oil or gas.
Therefore, using less energy helps us to preserve these resources and make them last longer in

If people use less energy, there is less pressure to increase the available supply of energy, for
example by constructing new power plants, or by importing energy from a different country.
There are many sources on the web that give you ideas of what you can do to save energy.
Here are a few ideas to help you:
* Change your travel behavior, think more in terms of public transportation, if possible,

* Reduce your house heat, keep the windows closed while heating, dress warmly.
* Choose products that come with lightweight packaging.
* Turn off lights and appliances when you are not using them, use energy-saving light bulbs.

Having clean drinking water is a basic human right. However, acid rain, industrial pollution and
garbage have made many sources of water undrinkable. Lakes, reservoirs and even entire seas
have become vast pools of poison. Lake Baikal in Russia is one of the largest lakes in the world.
It contains a rich variety of animals and plants, including 1,300 rare species that do not exist
anywhere else in the world. Yet, they are being destroyed by the massive volumes of industrial
effluent which pour into the lake every day. Even though laws have been made, the government
do not have the power to enforce them. Most industries simply ignore the regulations. The
Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of the world's water surface, but it is the dumping ground for
50% of all marine pollution. Almost 16 countries regularly throw industrial wastes a few miles
off shore. Water is free to everyone. A few years ago people thought that the supply of clean
water in the world was limitless. Today, many water supplies have been ruined by pollution and
sewage. Clean water is now scarce, and we are at last beginning to respect this precious source.
We should do something now.

LIFE BEYOND EARTH
Is there intelligent life on other planets? For years, scientists said "no" or "we don't know". But
today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers. They believe
intelligent life exists somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these
beings.
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is
time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. This is too long, say Shostak
and Barnett, for only one planet in the entire universe to have intelligent life. The second - the
universe is huge. Tools like the Hubble Telescope "have shown that shown that there are at least
100 billion galaxies," says Shostak. And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion
stars. Some planets circling these stars might be similar to Earth.
Until recently, it was difficult to search for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now,
powerful telescopes enable scientists to identify smaller planets - the size of other solar systems.
These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited Earth? Probably not, says Shostak. The distance between
planets is too great. Despite this, intelligent beings might eve other methods, such as radio
signals. In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don't have the right

189
tools to receive their messages. But this is changing, says Shostak. By 2025, we could make
contact with other life forms in our universe.

EARTHQUAKES

Every year there are over 150,000 earthquakes around the world. Many are very small and

We can develop alternative sources of energy, and unless we try we’ll never succeed.
Instead of burning fossil fuels we should be concentrating on more economical uses of
electricity, because electricity can be produced from any sources of energy. If we didn’t waste so
much energy, our resources would last longer. We can save more energy by conservation than
we can produce for the same money. Unless we do research on solar energy, wind power, tidal
power, hydroelectric plants … our fossil fuels will run out and we’ll all freeze or starve to death.
Several countries are spending much more time and money on research because the energy from
the sun, the waves, and the winds last forever. We won’t really survive unless we start working
on cleaner and safer sources of energy.

Television and Kids
Television is very popular and even has some benefits for kids. It helps very young
children learn the letters of the alphabet, and helps other kids learn about science, cultures, and
world events.

217
However, researchers show that too much TV is bad for children. For one thing, there
is a link between watching more than four hours of TV a day and being overweight. For
another thing, many TV shows are violent and upsetting. Watching these shows may cause
kids to be more fearful. And of course, more time in front of the TV means less time to
study. Too much TV may also be the cause of lower grades.
Experts do not agree on the solution to these problems. Some say that kids should
watch only educational programs; others say kids should watch no TV at all. And others
suggest
teaching them to watch TV as occasional entertainment, not as an everyday hobby.
