Learning Competency: The learners recognize that substances are classified into
elements and compounds.
I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of 60 minutes, 95% of the students will be able to:
1. classify substances as elements or compounds;
2. apply the elements and compounds in their daily life; and
3. create a poster of common elements and compounds showing their names,
symbols, and uses.

Motivational Activity
Title of Activity: “Element or Compound?”
Students will be shown 6 pictures of different materials or substances.
Volunteers will identify each picture if it is an element or a compound.
A. Activity
Title of Activity: “Poster chart”
Students will be grouped into 5 groups. Each group will create a poster
chart of 5 common elements and 5 common compounds showing their
names, symbols, and uses. They can refer to their periodic table of
elements. The students will be given 15 minutes to do the task
B. Analysis
The teacher will ask the students to present their outputs of the prior
activity.
During the presentation of outputs, the teacher will then ask questions.
Guide Questions:
1. Why is it considered an element?
2. Why is it considered a compound?
3. How do you differentiate between elements and
compounds?
C. Abstraction
The teacher will introduce the concept of elements and compounds.

Elements and compounds are pure chemical substances found in
nature.
Elements- A substance made of the same type of atoms. They
cannot be broken down into a simpler format. They are
distinguished by a unique atomic number. The elements are
organized by their atomic number in the periodic table, which
highlights elements with similar properties.
E. Evaluation

V ASSIGNMENT
By group assignment:
Each group will research a common household item or product, such as
table salt, baking soda, or vinegar, and identify the compounds that make
up the item or product.
Research and gather information about the properties and uses of each
compound, as well as how they interact with each other to create the final
product.
Each group member can then share their findings with the rest of the
group and compare the similarities and differences between their assigned
compounds.
Submit your findings using graphic organizers.
