Ratio and
Proportion
Prepared by: Sir Mark Anthony R. Gueco
RATIO
• Ratio is the comparison between two
numbers or quantities.
• Ratio can be expressed in four ways and
can be written as:
 Colon form a:b
 Division form a÷b
 Phrase form a to b
 Fraction form
read as “a is to b”
Imagine, I have 3
parallelograms
and 2 trapezoids.
•  Colon form 3:2
 Division form 3÷2
 Phrase form 3 to 2
 Fraction form
read as “3 is to 2”
Express the following ratio
in simplest form
• 1. 1 hour to 40 minutes
÷ = or 3:2

2. 2 weeks to 4 days
÷ = or 7:2
•3. Eight out of 30 passengers are tourists.
Find the ratio of the tourist to the other
passenger.

Total number of passengers = tourist + other

passengers
30 = 8 + other passengers
30-8 = other passengers
22 = other
passengers

÷ = or 4:11
•4. There are 600 pupils in a school. The
ratio of boys to girls in this school is 3:5.
How many girls and how many boys are in
this school?

Let 3x = the total number of girls 3(75) = 225

5x = the total number of boys 5(75) = 375
Total number of pupils = the total number of girls + the total number
of boys
600 = 3x+5x
600 = 8x
= x= 75
•5. In a certain room, there are 28 women and
21 men.
a. What is the ratio of men to women?
÷ = or 3:4

b. What is the ratio of women to the total number

of people?
÷ = or 4:7
PROPORTION
• A proportion is an equation that shows two
ratios are equal.
• It can be written as a:b = c:d or where b
≠ 0 and d ≠ 0.
2:3 and 4:6
a:b = c:d
2:3 = 4:6
Means
Extremes
The product of the extreme is equal
to the product of the means, ad =
bc.
Quick Exercise
•1. Simplify as fully as possible 28:42
2. In a class of 10 Boys and 14 Girls the
